Creative Product Designer - No Ordinary Gift
If you’re a creative, commercially minded designer who loves coming up with ideas and then turning those ideas into real products, this could be the perfect role for you.
At No Ordinary Gift, we design and manufacture a wide range of products - from Christmas decorations and greetings cards to embroidered clothing and keepsakes.
We're looking for a creative problem-solver as much as a designer. Someone who enjoys figuring out what we could make, how we could make it and, importantly, creating something real customers will love.
With UV printing, embroidery, laser cutting, sublimation, vinyl (and more!) production capabilities on site, this isn't a role where you'll spend all day designing at a computer. You'll research opportunities, develop concepts, create artwork, source materials, make prototypes and help turn ideas into products that can be efficiently manufactured by our in-house team.
Our product development is guided by sales data, trends and gaps within our existing ranges. You'll receive briefs identifying opportunities and then have plenty of creative freedom in how you respond to them. You’ll work alongside another Product Designer and get to see your ideas go from initial concept to real products.
The Role
- Developing commercially viable new products and ranges in response to sales data, trends and opportunities identified within our ranges
- Researching competitors, trends, materials and product opportunities
- Creating design concepts and artwork in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
- Taking feedback, rapidly improving designs and getting products ready for launch
- Experimenting with different materials and manufacturing processes
- Physically making and testing prototypes
- Preparing accurate production-ready artwork files and templates
- Checking automated customer artwork daily and resolving template issues
- Managing products through our internal systems ready for launch
- Being an integral part of a small creative team
You don't need manufacturing experience, but any experience with print equipment or laser cutters would be a bonus.
What We’re Looking For
- Highly competent in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
- Comfortable using AI-assisted design tools as part of a modern creative workflow
- Creative, full of ideas and commercially minded
- Hands-on and interested in turning designs into physical products
- Organised, accurate and comfortable using spreadsheets
- Proactive, self-motivated and comfortable taking ownership of a brief
- Comfortable receiving feedback and rapidly developing ideas
- Curious about new materials, processes and technology
- Flexible and happy working within a small, fast-moving team
We're more interested in ability, ideas and attitude than years of experience. You could have experience in a similar role or be coming straight from university or college.
Working Environment
We're a small, growing business and things move quickly. Priorities sometimes change and products are developed and iterated at pace.
The role also has a technical side. Our personalised products rely on automated artwork, so you'll spend time each day checking customer files and fixing or adjusting templates. This requires accuracy and can occasionally be repetitive.
Christmas is particularly busy. At peak times you may spend more time creating files, troubleshooting artwork and occasionally helping the wider team get orders packed and dispatched.
