About the role
The IT team provides a wide range of computing and network support, delivering and supporting IT equipment, specialist software, services and networking in support of the teaching and research activities of the Department.
Reporting to the IT Manager, you will help provide excellent support to academic, research, student and administrative users of IT. A key aspect of the role is staffing the service desk, our users' primary point of contact with the IT team, ensuring that through effective communication, robust processes and procedures, and high-quality documentation, we help the Department get the best value from its IT services.
You will primarily provide support to staff, researchers and students across several Department buildings, including sites in central Oxford, Begbroke, and buildings shared with other affiliated departments.
You will be responsible for providing first-line IT support across the Department, including IT hardware, software, telephony, audio-visual equipment, computer and printer management, and user accounts. You will also help implement University IT policies and procedures, produce information through ad-hoc reporting, and plan and deliver IT inductions for new staff. You will be expected to work flexibly where required.
About the team
You'll be joining a collaborative team of skilled IT professionals, each bringing their own areas of expertise while actively sharing knowledge and supporting one another's development. We don't work in silos, so you'll gain exposure to a diverse range of technologies, from specialist research equipment and scientific software to enterprise infrastructure and modern end-user computing. This role is ideally suited to someone looking to develop a broad technical skillset in a varied environment where continuous learning and professional development are actively encouraged.
About you
You will have a strong customer service focus and a flexible, can-do attitude.
You will be educated to A-level standard, with GCSE English and Maths (Grade A-C/4-9) or equivalent.
You will have experience of working in an IT support role and a good understanding of core first-line IT support principles.
You will have an awareness of data protection and information security requirements, together with the ability to communicate technical information clearly and accurately to non-technical users.
A demonstrable ability to prioritise your own workload, produce accurate and detailed work to agreed deadlines, and work both independently and as part of a team is essential.
In return, you'll join a supportive team that values curiosity, initiative and collaboration, where you'll have the opportunity to broaden your technical experience, contribute to a wide range of projects, and build a rewarding career supporting world-leading teaching and research.
