Job Description
The Spray Shop Prepper is responsible for preparing all timber, MDF, veneered and manufactured components to the highest possible standard prior to spray finishing.
The role is critical in achieving the exceptional finish quality that Painted is known for. The successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting components, repairing imperfections, sanding, filling and preparing surfaces ready for primer and topcoat application, ensuring every product leaving the preparation department is ready for a flawless finish.
Working within a fast-paced manufacturing environment, the Spray Shop Prepper will maintain high standards of workmanship, productivity and housekeeping while working safely and collaboratively with colleagues across the production team.
The role requires excellent attention to detail, a strong understanding of timber materials and finishing techniques, and a commitment to delivering outstanding quality on every project.
Key Objectives
1. Surface Preparation Excellence
Prepare all components to the highest quality standard, ensuring every surface is perfectly prepared for spray finishing.
2. Quality Assurance
Identify, repair and eliminate imperfections before components enter the spray booths, preventing defects and reducing rework.
3. Production Efficiency
Work efficiently to meet production schedules while maintaining exceptional quality standards and supporting on-time delivery.
4. Workshop Organisation
Maintain a clean, organised and safe preparation area, ensuring all equipment and materials are properly maintained.
5. Continuous Improvement
Contribute ideas to improve preparation methods, reduce waste and increase productivity throughout the Spray Shop.
Key Responsibilities
Surface Preparation
- Prepare MDF, solid timber, veneered panels and other substrates for spray finishing.
- Sand components using both hand sanding techniques and mechanical sanding equipment.
- Apply appropriate wood fillers, repair compounds and finishing materials to achieve flawless surfaces.
- Repair dents, chips, machining marks and other defects prior to spraying.
- Ensure all surfaces meet Painted's quality standards before progressing to the next production stage.
Production
- Work to production schedules and daily priorities.
- Ensure components are correctly labelled and tracked throughout the production process.
- Work closely with Spray Painters to ensure components are ready for finishing.
- Minimise waste through careful preparation and material handling.
- Report any quality issues or manufacturing defects promptly.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Operate hand sanders, extraction systems and preparation equipment safely.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
- Report damaged or faulty equipment immediately.
- Ensure preparation areas remain clean and organised throughout the working day.
Quality Control
- Carry out visual inspections before components leave the preparation department.
- Maintain consistently high standards across all work.
- Take ownership of quality, ensuring defects are identified before spray finishing.
- Support continuous improvement by reducing defects and rework.
Health & Safety
- Follow all Company Health & Safety procedures.
- Wear the required PPE at all times.
- Handle materials and equipment safely.
- Maintain excellent housekeeping standards.
- Support a safe working environment for all colleagues.
Teamwork
- Work collaboratively with Spray Painters, Production Managers and Workshop colleagues.
- Assist colleagues during busy production periods.
- Communicate effectively regarding job progress and quality concerns.

Skills & Experience
- Previous experience preparing MDF, timber and veneered components for spray finishing.
- Excellent knowledge of sanding techniques and surface preparation.
- Experience using hand-held and powered sanding equipment.
- Good understanding of wood fillers and repair techniques.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work to deadlines without compromising quality.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
