Other vacancy related information
Work Pattern
Full time (applications are welcome from people who work part time, as part of a job share or who work full time)
37 hours per week. Applications from those wishing to work part-time are welcome, but you will need to be able to work at least 21 hours per week to give sufficient time to complete the apprenticeship
Application Form
After submitting your application, you will receive an email containing a link to complete an eligibility check using a Microsoft Form with our Apprenticeship Training Provider. It is essential that you complete this check, as we will be unable to progress your application without it.
Please read each question carefully and ensure that the information provided is true, accurate and completed to the best of your knowledge at the time of submission.
As part of the eligibility assessment, the training provider may ask to see copies of your educational certificates, either during the initial eligibility check or as part of the pre-employment checks process.
All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their eligibility check.
Sift
If the training provider confirms that you are eligible for the Apprenticeship Programme, the evidence provided in your application form will be assessed by a recruitment panel. This will be a name-free sift. Successful candidates will be invited to interview. All applicants will be informed of the outcome of the sift.
In the event of a large number of applications, we may apply one or more of the following measures:
An initial sift against Experience 2. Candidates who pass the initial sift may either progress to a full sift or be progressed directly to assessment/interview.
We may increase the minimum score required to pass the sift.
We may operate a sift reserve list. Where more candidates achieve the required standard at sift than can reasonably be progressed to the next stage of assessment, the panel may progress only the highest-performing candidates. Candidates who have met the required standard but are not initially progressed may be placed on the sift reserve list, in merit order, for 12 months. If vacancies remain unfilled following completion of the final assessment stage, candidates may be invited from the sift reserve list to progress through the remaining stages of the recruitment process. Placement on the sift reserve list does not guarantee progression to a later stage of the recruitment process or an offer of employment.
Interview
Interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams. All candidates will be notified of the outcome of their interview.
Conditional Offer
Candidates who successfully complete the assessment process will receive a conditional offer of an apprenticeship with the Welsh Government. Once you accept the conditional offer, we will begin the pre-employment checks process, which typically takes between 6 and 8 weeks to complete.
Pre Enrolment Assessments
As part of the apprenticeship requirements, our Apprenticeship Training Provider will ask you to complete the Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) assessment. This online assessment helps evaluate your literacy, numeracy and digital skills and identifies whether any additional support or development may be beneficial when undertaking your apprenticeship. Do It Profiler – helping learners to understand their individual strengths, skills, preferences and areas for development, supporting them to recognise how these can be applied within the workplace.
Matching Process
Following acceptance of your conditional offer and completion of the WEST assessment, we will use the information provided in your application to match you to a suitable role within the Welsh Government. Following the matching process, you will be provided with the Job Description for the role to which you have been matched.
Reasonable Adjustments
We are committed to providing an inclusive recruitment process. Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to tell us about any reasonable adjustments they would like us to consider as part of the matching process. This will help us ensure that individuals are matched to roles where they can thrive and perform at their best.
Location Merit Lists
Candidates will be asked to indicate their preferred location(s) at the interview stage of the assessment process. Following assessment, successful candidates will be ranked in merit order and separate merit lists will be maintained for each location. Appointments will be made in merit order from the relevant location merit list as vacancies arise.
Candidates may be contacted about opportunities in locations other than those originally selected. Declining such an opportunity will not affect a candidate's position on the merit list for their preferred location(s).
The locations being considered for this Apprenticeship campaign are:
Southeast Wales (Cardiff and Merthyr)
Southwest Wales (Swansea and Carmarthen)
Mid Wales (Aberystwyth, Llandrindod Wells, Newtown)
North Wales (Wrexham, Caernarfon and Llandudno Junction)
Please be aware we cannot guarantee we will be able to offer a post in your preferred location.
Reserve List
A reserve list may be held for this opportunity. Any candidate who is successful in being offered a reserve status, will remain on the reserve list for 12 months. If suitable roles become available during this time, we may contact you.
Travel and Working Hours
Some roles may require travel, shift patterns, weekend working.
Welsh Language
We’re aiming to become a fully bilingual organisation, leading the way for other public sector organisations within a Wales where the language is more visible and more frequently used. Meeting this ambition starts with developing the language skills of our own people.
Speaking Cymraeg is not a pre-requisite for becoming an apprentice; we do not expect any candidate to have any knowledge or experience of the language so you can join us with or without existing Cymraeg skills. From the moment you join us, we will give you time and space to learn the language so that you feel confident and able to hold basic work-related conversations by the time you complete your qualification. For anyone already confident in using the language, you’ll take proficiency training to apply the language in the Welsh Government context.
We have a learning package to suit everyone, no matter what your learning style, so we will work closely with you ahead of your appointment to find a solution that works for you.
Office Attendance
We support Smart Working: a flexible, inclusive and safe approach that balances organisational needs with individual wellbeing.
Most colleagues are expected to spend at least 40% of their working time in the office (around two days a week, pro rata for part-time colleagues) to support collaboration, connection and delivery. The remainder of the week may be spent working from home or other locations, although some roles may require more office-based attendance to meet business needs.
Smart Working is supported through regular conversations with managers, Team Charters and agreed working arrangements that help teams work effectively across office, remote and blended environments.
