We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced volunteer to support the attraction, recruitment and development of our special constables.
This rewarding volunteer opportunity will support the recruitment, assessment and development of individuals who wish to serve our communities as special constables. Volunteering alongside recruitment, training and operational teams, you will provide guidance to applicants, support selection activities and contribute to the delivery and continuous improvement of training and development programmes.
As a volunteer in this role, you will directly contribute to the ongoing development of Surrey’s Special Constabulary while gaining valuable experience in recruitment, assessment, learning and development.

Volunteering collaboratively with recruitment and training colleagues, you will help ensure that our special constables receive a high-quality, professional and supportive experience throughout their recruitment and development. Key tasks that volunteers in this role will carry out will include:
Recruitment & Selection
- Provide advice, guidance and support to prospective special constable applicants throughout the recruitment and selection process.
- Support attraction, recruitment and engagement activities.
- Participate in selection processes, including interviews, assessment centres and candidate evaluations.
- Assess applicants against agreed criteria, ensuring recruitment guidance and best practice are applied consistently.
- Accurately record interview notes, assessment outcomes and candidate feedback using approved systems and processes.
- Deliver constructive and professional feedback to candidates following selection processes.
Learning & Development
- Support the review, delivery and continuous improvement of training, development activities and learning materials for special constables.
- Assist learners through coaching, assessment and continuing professional development (CPD) activities.
- Assist with training administration using relevant systems, including Microsoft applications and volunteer management systems.
To be successful in this role, you will have previous experience of working or volunteering within a policing environment and be passionate about supporting others to achieve their potential. You will bring a positive, professional and collaborative approach, with the ability to encourage and develop individuals throughout their recruitment and learning.
Your Skills and Experience
- Previous experience of working or volunteering within a policing environment (at least three years frontline operational experience).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to provide objective and constructive feedback in both individual and group settings.
- Experience of coaching, mentoring, training, teaching or supporting the development of others.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Competence in Microsoft 365 applications, including PowerPoint and SharePoint.
It would also be beneficial if you have:
- Experience of recruitment, interviewing or candidate assessment.
- Experience delivering training, presentations or facilitated learning.
- Knowledge of Surrey Police systems, policies and procedures.
- Qualifications in English and Maths at QCF Level 2 (or equivalent).
Applicants must be willing to undertake role-specific training and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
