English Teacher – SEND School
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate English Teacher to join our SEND school. The successful candidate will lead the delivery of English across the school, supporting pupils with a range of additional needs to develop their literacy, communication, confidence and independence.
This is a key teaching role within a small, supportive team. While English will be the main area of responsibility, the successful candidate will also be expected to contribute more widely to the daily running of the school. This may include supporting pupils in lessons, assisting with behaviour and pastoral support, lunchtime supervision, and helping with general school routines where needed.
The role would suit someone who is flexible, patient, practical and committed to making a meaningful difference for pupils who may not thrive in mainstream settings.
Duties
- Plan and deliver engaging English lessons tailored to pupils with SEND.
- Support pupils in developing reading, writing, speaking, listening and wider communication skills.
- Adapt learning activities to meet individual needs, ability levels and EHCP targets where appropriate.
- Track and record pupil progress, adjusting teaching approaches where needed.
- Use clear behaviour management strategies to support a calm and positive learning environment.
- Work closely with the wider team to support pupils’ academic, social and emotional development.
- Provide classroom support in other subject areas when required.
- Support pupils outside formal English lessons, including during transitions, breaks, lunchtimes and enrichment activities.
- Assist with general TA-style support, mentoring and supervision as part of the school team.
- Communicate effectively with parents, carers, colleagues and external professionals where appropriate.
- Contribute to reviews, reports and pupil progress discussions.
- Support the wider life of the school, including routines, safeguarding practice and positive relationships with pupils.
Requirements
- Experience teaching English or supporting English learning.
- Experience working with pupils with SEND, SEMH, additional learning needs, or vulnerable young people. (Desirable)
- Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
- Ability to plan and deliver differentiated lessons for pupils working at different levels.
- A flexible and team-focused approach, with willingness to support beyond English teaching when needed.
- Good communication skills with pupils, staff, parents/carers and external professionals.
- Organised approach to lesson planning, progress tracking and record keeping.
- Relevant teaching qualification or strong experience in education.
- Patience, resilience and a genuine commitment to inclusive education.
Desirable
- Experience working in a SEND school, alternative provision, PRU, specialist setting or similar environment.
- Knowledge of EHCPs and personalised learning targets.
- Experience supporting pupils with social, emotional or communication needs.
- Confidence supporting small groups and one-to-one interventions.
About the Role
This is not a role for someone who only wants to teach English lessons and leave the wider school support to others. As part of a small SEND school team, flexibility is essential. The successful candidate will lead English provision, but will also help with the wider care, supervision and support of pupils throughout the school day.

Pay: £20.00-£25.00 per hour
