Maintenance Engineer

Steel Galvanizing Plant
To support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all plant, equipment, and infrastructure within the galvanizing facility. Working as part of the maintenance team, the Maintenance Engineer is responsible for carrying out planned preventative maintenance, reactive repairs, fault finding, equipment improvements, and continuous improvement activities to minimise downtime and maximise production efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repair
· Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities on production equipment, machinery, and site services.
· Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and carry out effective fault diagnosis and repairs.
· Maintain galvanizing process equipment including conveyors, pumps, motors, gearboxes, cranes, furnaces, ventilation systems, and associated plant machinery.
· Repair and replace mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components as required.
· Ensure all maintenance work is completed to a high standard and in accordance with company procedures.
Operational Support
· Work closely with production teams to minimise downtime and maintain plant availability.
· Assist with equipment installations, upgrades, and commissioning projects.
· Support shutdown and maintenance schedules to ensure production targets are achieved.
· Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities for improved reliability and efficiency.
Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
· Comply with all company health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
· Follow safe systems of work, permit-to-work procedures, and risk assessments.
· Report hazards, near misses, accidents, and unsafe conditions immediately.
· Ensure maintenance activities are conducted with minimal environmental impact and in compliance with relevant regulations.
Continuous Improvement
· Contribute to continuous improvement and reliability initiatives across the site.
· Assist in root cause analysis investigations following equipment failures.
· Recommend and implement maintenance improvements to reduce recurring faults.
· Support the development and updating of maintenance procedures and documentation.
Documentation and Reporting
· Accurately complete maintenance records, work orders, and inspection reports.
· Update maintenance management systems with completed work and equipment information.
· Provide feedback to the Maintenance Manager on equipment performance, maintenance requirements, and improvement opportunities.
Skills and Experience
Essential
· Recognised engineering qualification (Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, HNC/HND, or equivalent).
· Previous experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
· Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
· Experience with mechanical and/or electrical maintenance.
· Good understanding of preventative maintenance systems.
· Ability to read engineering drawings and technical documentation.
· Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
· Awareness of health and safety requirements within an industrial environment.
Desirable
· Experience within steel processing, galvanizing, metals manufacturing, or heavy industry.
· Electrical qualifications and experience with control systems.
· Knowledge of PLC-controlled equipment.
· Welding and fabrication skills.
Working Conditions
· Based within a steel galvanising manufacturing facility.
· Work may involve shift patterns, overtime, and call-out duties as required.
· Regular exposure to industrial environments including heat, noise, moving machinery, and outdoor conditions.
· Appropriate PPE must be worn at all times.
Working Hours and Shift Expectations
The Maintenance Engineer will provide leadership and support to a manufacturing operation that may operate on a multi-shift, extended hours, or continuous production basis.
The role requires:
· Flexibility to work across day, evening, night, and weekend shifts as dictated by business and operational requirements.
· Regular interaction with all shift teams to ensure consistent maintenance standards and effective communication across the site.
· Participation in an on-call rota to provide engineering leadership and technical support during plant breakdowns and emergency situations.
· Availability to attend site outside normal working hours during critical equipment failures, planned shutdowns, major maintenance activities, and capital projects.
· Attendance at shift handovers, production meetings, and maintenance planning reviews as required.
· Willingness to alter working patterns periodically to support operational priorities and continuous improvement initiatives.
· Leadership presence during major shutdowns, annual maintenance programmes, and commissioning activities, which may require extended working hours.
Pay: £40,000.00-£45,000.00 per year
