We are currently looking for a Monitoring and Enforcement Officer to join our Development and Enforcement Team on a full time, fixed term basis for 1 year.
The Role
This role is ideal for someone working towards developing their career in planning and seeking RTPI qualification. We use the planning function to help to protect the valued characteristics of our National Park and this role will provide an opportunity to deal with a wide range of planning enforcement casework, including site investigation, background research of planning history, close liaison with planning and legal officers and negotiation with landowners and planning applicants.
The Peak District National Park is a treasured landscape that has been shaped by the long interaction of natural and cultural forces and you will play an important role in maintaining the balance between people and nature to ensure that the Park can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Working across both area teams of the Authority’s development management and enforcement service, you will respond to enquiries and make recommendations on action e.g. the encouragement of retrospective planning applications or by instigating formal legal action. Reporting to the Area Team Managers, you will negotiate with applicants and land owners and prepare delegated reports and make recommendations to your managers on the expediency to take action.
You will frequently work alongside our in-house conservation, archaeology, landscape, ecology, and arboriculture specialists, providing excellent opportunities for professional development in conservation as well as planning practice. You will also gain an insight into our integrated planning advice service (including pre-application advice) to applicants and members of the public on planning matters and help to prepare case documentation on planning appeals, including formal hearings and public inquiries.

About You
To join us as either a Monitoring and Enforcement Officer, you will need:
- Good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to read and interpret technical plans and drawings
- A high standard of written and verbal communication skills
- An awareness of town and country planning legislation (especially the GPDO, Use Classes Order, Advertisement Regulations and enforcement powers in the Town and Country Planning Act 1990).
Qualifications and/or experience is desirable in one or more of the following:
- Town and country planning.
- Law enforcement.
- Building construction.
Knowledge of one or more of the following is also desirable:
- Building and landscape conservation.
- Agriculture/rural issues.
- Geography of the Peak District.
