St Cross is one of eight colleges within the University of Oxford dedicated to postgraduate students. Situated on St Giles’ in heart of the city, it boasts picturesque quadrangles secluded from the busy streets outside. The international character of the community, the extraordinary range of subjects studied and the intellectual curiosity of our committed graduate students and Fellowship makes for a highly stimulating environment.
The Porters’ Lodge plays a vital role within the college community and the Porters provide a professional front-of-house service whilst supporting the security, safety, and daily operation of the College. The role is central to college life, acting as the first point of contact for students, staff, Fellows, visitors and conference guests. Our team provide a compassionate, sensitive and welcoming environment with a clear culture of helpfulness and support for all members of the College, particularly our students.
The Porter assists with postal duties, room setups, audio-visual support, events, facilities coordination, and emergency response, ensuring the College operates efficiently and safely. Successful applicants will be organised, have an eye for detail, and be able to prioritise a range of tasks. As a first point of contact for many factions of the college community, Lodge Porters need to have strong interpersonal and communication skills.
The Lodge operates between 07:00 and 00:00 daily and is managed by the Head Porter who reports to the Domestic Bursar. Overnight support is provided by Junior Deans and Site Wardens. The College also maintains a 24-hour contract with Oxford University Security Services.
This is a casual position offered on a zero-hours basis. Whilst work may be available on a regular basis, there are no guaranteed hours of work, and shifts will be offered in line with operational requirements. Hours may vary from week to week, and successful candidates will be contacted when Porter support is required. The organisation is under no obligation to provide work, and the casual worker is under no obligation to accept work offered.
