If you already work in a residential children's home in Kent and you want a change, have a look at this one.
It is a permanent, salaried post paying £31,500 a year, with a £2,800 joining bonus on top across your first year, paid as £700 every quarter so it starts arriving three months in rather than at the end of the year. We cannot offer visa sponsorship, so you will need the existing right to work in the UK.
It is a small therapeutic home near Faversham, owner led rather than part of a chain, and open two years. You would be working with a very small number of young people, so you have the time to do the work rather than just hold the building together.
The pattern
One long day into a sleep-in, handover the next morning, then two days off, and it repeats. So you get two days off after every shift you work.
How we work
The model is therapeutic, so the job is thinking about what is driving a behaviour rather than managing it physically. We de-escalate verbally and by distraction. Physical intervention is a last resort here and it is not the day-to-day of the job, and the framework we train in is PRICE.
Where it goes
There is a progression route from care staff through team leader and deputy to registered manager. The owner signs off every hire himself, so you are not a number going through a regional recruiter.
What we are looking for
Experience in a residential children's home. We care more about how you think about behaviour than the exact number of months, so if you are a little short on paper and you know the work, apply anyway. What we are not looking for is domiciliary or elderly care, because the shift is long and the young people can be dysregulated, and people who have done this before are not thrown by that.
It is a difficult job and we would rather say so. It is 24/7, it involves sleep-ins and overnights, and you will work with young people who are sometimes angry and distressed. Our expectations are high because the children need them to be.
How it runs
Apply here and we send you an application pack to complete. It takes a bit of time, and everything after it is a single visit. The interview and a supervised couple of hours at the home happen on the same day, so the team and the young people meet you and you see the place properly. Bring your ID with you. If we offer you the job, the offer letter and the checks start straight away.
