THE COMPANY
Established in 1998, JSM Group designs and installs the power networks, digital infrastructure and specialist systems that critical industries run on, from high-power grid connections and data centres to renewable energy. Our turnkey teams deliver complex infrastructure at speed, on time, and with reduced legislative, technical and commercial risk.
THE TEAM
You’ll sit within our IT team and play a key role in supporting our pre-construction team, where every project starts. Estimating, design, commercial, delivery and advisory colleagues all rely on information flowing cleanly between them. You’ll become the person who knows how our systems work, helps colleagues get more out of them, and spots where a manual step or a duplicated effort could be removed.
Our teams delivers high-value electrical infrastructure projects for some of the most demanding clients in the sector – from hyperscale data centre operators to major industrial and grid clients. We are building a team of exceptional project management professionals who can drive complex programmes from award through to energisation, and we want people who take real ownership of their projects
SCOPE OF ROLE
This is a great first step into a career in digital and business systems. JSM has invested in good tools Procore, Claude, Microsoft 365 and a growing set of approved AI tools among them. This role exists because tools only create value when people use them well, and that takes someone whose job it is to help.
This is a role of people as much as a technical one. You don’t need to code, and you don’t need previous experience – just curiosity about technology, patience with people who are busy, and an eye for a better way of doing things.
What you’ll be doing
- Support colleagues’ day to day in their use of our business systems – including Procore, Microsoft 365 and our approved AI tools – responding through the right channel, escalating anything more complex, and keeping simple records so we can fix recurring causes rather than symptoms.
- Become a recognised superuser of the tools the pre-construction team relies on and keep your own knowledge current as those tools change.
- Run short training sessions, floor-walks and drop-ins, and write clear, plain-English guides, quick-reference cards and short how-to videos – pitched at the audience rather than at the technology.
- Use our digital systems to identify productivity and performance improvements – where work is duplicated, where information gets stuck, where a manual step could be removed – and put practical suggestions forward, thinking about the wider impact and flagging the risks as well as the benefits.
- Help configure and maintain digital workspaces, templates, permissions and folder structures so information is easy to find and consistently stored.
- Handle data accurately and securely and maintain system security in line with JSM policy – applying information-security principles to how information is transferred, stored, used and deleted, and helping colleagues understand why those controls exist rather than just enforcing them.
- Support the roll-out of new tools and changes to existing ones – helping test, gather feedback and bring people up to speed.
- Use collaborative technologies to help teams share information and good practice across our three business lines.
- Work safely and follow health and safety appropriate to the task, including when visiting sites.
- Complete your apprenticeship coursework and build your knowledge with our support – including sitting in with colleagues in other departments and on live bids and feasibility work to see how they work.
What you’ll study
- You’ll work towards the Digital Support Technician Level 3 standard (ST0120), taking the Digital Applications Technician option – typically around 15 months plus an end-point assessment.
- Study is usually blended (day-release or online) with a training provider, with paid time set aside for your off-the-job learning.
- You’ll cover digital information systems; digital architecture, including storage, cloud and operating systems; maintaining end-user systems; information security and system security; managing and analysing data; collaborative technologies; digital change and transformation; and communicating effectively with non-technical audiences.
- On completion we’ll talk with you about your next step. Options may include further digital or business improvement apprenticeships as your role develops. Any funded progression will depend on the apprenticeship funding rules in place at the time.
What we’re looking for
Essential
- Curiosity about technology and an interest in how systems and processes work.
- GCSEs grade 4/C or above, including math and English.
- Patience and helpful manners. Much of this role is helping people who are busy and, occasionally, frustrated.
- The ability to explain something clearly to a colleague who isn’t technical, and to listen properly to what they need.
- An eye for a better way of doing things, and the confidence to suggest it.
- Organised and reliable, and willing to take responsibility for seeing things through.
- Any exposure to Microsoft 365, AI tools, or helping others with technology – school, college, a course or your own interest – is welcome but not essential.
- Right to work in the UK.
