About The Barn
At The Barn, our purpose is simple but powerful: to make a positive difference to children’s lives.
We create nurturing, inspiring environments where children feel safe, valued and curious about the world around them. Rooted in outdoor learning and play-based practice, our ethos encourages children to explore, get messy, build confidence and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Across our four nurseries on Teesside, we are building something special — a warm, ambitious organisation where children, families and educators thrive together. Our Fairfield nursery is a much-loved part of that community.
The Role
We are looking for a reliable, thorough and conscientious Cleaner to join our team at The Barn at Fairfield. This is a genuinely important role: a clean, hygienic and welcoming environment is the foundation on which everything else we do is built.
You will work 3 hours per day, 5 days per week, outside of nursery operating hours. Shifts are either 4.00am–7.00am or 6.00pm–9.00pm, and we are happy to discuss which pattern suits you best.
This role would suit someone who:
- Takes pride in their work and has a keen eye for detail
- Is reliable, punctual and self-motivated
- Is comfortable working independently
- Has a warm, positive attitude and cares about the environment they are maintaining
- Understands or is willing to learn the importance of hygiene standards in a childcare setting
Key Responsibilities
- Thorough daily cleaning of all rooms, corridors, toilets and shared spaces
- Safe and correct use of cleaning products in line with COSHH guidelines
- Emptying and disposal of waste
- Restocking of consumables (soap, paper towels, toilet roll) as needed
- Reporting any maintenance concerns or damage to the nursery manager
- Ensuring all cleaning equipment is stored safely and correctly after use
- Supporting the nursery’s commitment to maintaining high standards of hygiene and presentation at all times
What We’re Looking For
No formal qualifications are required. We are looking for someone who:
- Has previous cleaning experience (commercial, domestic or institutional — all considered)
- Is familiar with, or willing to learn, correct use of cleaning chemicals and equipment
- Can work reliably and independently without close supervision
- Is physically able to carry out the duties of the role
- Is honest, trustworthy and respectful of a childcare environment
Experience of cleaning within a school, nursery, healthcare or similar regulated setting would be an advantage, but is not essential.
What We Offer
- £13.00 per hour
- 15 hours per week across 5 days — ideal as a standalone role or alongside other commitments

- Blue Light Card eligibility — access to thousands of discounts with national retailers
- Employee discount on childcare
