Zen Educate are looking for experienced KS2 Primary School Teaching Assistants, with experience supporting challenging behaviour and children with SEN in a mainstream school environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils with a range of special educational needs, including autism (ASD), ADHD, speech and language needs, and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.
- Work one-to-one or with small groups to deliver tailored learning activities.
- Help pupils remain engaged in lessons by adapting activities and providing appropriate support.
- Implement behaviour support plans and follow school policies for managing challenging behaviour.
- Use positive behaviour management strategies, including:
- Positive reinforcement
- De-escalation techniques
- Clear routines and boundaries
- Visual supports and communication aids
- Build trusting relationships that promote confidence, emotional regulation, and resilience.
- Record and report observations on pupils' progress, behaviour, and wellbeing.
- Support pupils during break times, educational visits, and other school activities.
- Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and parents/carers to ensure consistent support.
- Promote safeguarding, equality, inclusion, and the welfare of all pupils.
Supporting Challenging Behaviour
An SEN Teaching Assistant may work with pupils who:
- Display verbal or physical aggression.
- Struggle with emotional regulation.
- Have sensory processing difficulties.
- Experience anxiety or distress that affects behaviour.
- Find transitions, changes in routine, or social interactions challenging.
The role involves:
- Remaining calm and professional during incidents.
- Identifying triggers for behaviour.
- Using proactive strategies to prevent escalation.
- Encouraging positive choices and self-regulation.
- Following individual behaviour support plans and risk assessments.
- Recording incidents accurately and reporting concerns appropriately.
Essential Skills and Qualities

- Strong communication and listening skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Understanding of behaviour as a form of communication.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Good organisational and record-keeping skills.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting children's welfare.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Experience working with children with SEN or disabilities.
- Knowledge of autism, ADHD, SEMH, or learning difficulties.
- Training in positive behaviour support, Team Teach, MAPA, or de-escalation techniques (desirable).
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths; relevant Teaching Assistant qualification is advantageous.
