For over 40 years, Roundhouse Engineering has been a leader in the model engineering sector, world-renowned for manufacturing high-quality 16mm live steam locomotives for garden railways. We are a close-knit, dedicated team of 13 passionate craftspeople looking for our 14th team member to join our bodywork department.
The Role
As a Model Builder in our bodywork department, you will play a hands-on role in assembling the detailed bodies and components of our live steam engines. You will work directly with etched metal components and white metal castings, ensuring every model meets our high standard of craftsmanship.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor stock levels of metal etching sheets to support the production schedule.
- Accurately cut out, form, and solder etched metal components.
- Produce white metal components using our centrifugal spin-casting equipment.
- Clean, drill, tap, and finish castings before preparing them for the paint department.
- Maintain high standards of quality control and attention to detail.
- Provide occasional support across other workshop departments as production demands require.
What We Are Looking For
- Attention to Detail: An excellent eye for detail and pride in accurate, precise work.
- Basic Tool Experience: Confidence using basic hand tools such as files, pliers, and hand drills.
- Soldering Skills: Previous experience with soldering (specifically using a blowtorch) is preferred, though full training will be provided for the right candidate.
- Machinery Exposure: Experience operating basic workshop machinery (pillar drill, belt sander, fly press, or centrifuge) is advantageous, but not essential.
- Adaptability: A hardworking, self-motivated team player willing to assist in various workshop duties.
Working Hours & Benefits
- Salary: £24,784.50 per year.
- Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week with an early Friday finish. No weekend work.
- Holiday Allowance: 25 days paid holiday plus statutory public holidays.

Key Employment Information
- Contract Details: Position begins with an initial 3-month trial period, followed by a 9-month extension leading to a permanent contract upon successful completion of the 12 months.
- Health & Safety: White metal casting material contains lead. Annual lead blood monitoring tests are mandatory and provided as a standard health and safety requirement.
