About the Role
We are seeking a committed and compassionate Family Support Worker to join our newly established Family Assessment Centre. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a developing service that provides practical support, guidance, and structured assessment for parents and their children.
You will play a key role in helping families build on their strengths, develop safe and nurturing routines, and work towards positive outcomes. As a consistent and positive role model, you will support parents in caring for their children while contributing to fair, evidence‑based assessments that inform future planning.
Key Responsibilities
General Duties
- Work collaboratively with families, offering support tailored to their individual needs as outlined in their placement plan.
- Model safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate care for children throughout the assessment process.
- Encourage families to participate fully in their assessment, including classes, activities, and centre routines.
- Promote engagement in local community activities that support parenting and child development.
- Contribute to parenting assessments alongside colleagues and social workers.
- Promote a positive, inclusive environment free from bullying, discrimination, and prejudice.
- Involve families and children (where appropriate) in decisions about their assessment and plans.
- Work proactively as part of a supportive team, contributing to a positive workplace culture.
Specific Duties
- Provide practical advice and emotional support to families in line with placement plans, organisational policies, and best practice.
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and families, responding promptly to safeguarding concerns.
- Build nurturing, professional relationships that support families through the assessment journey.
- Support families to manage behaviour safely and appropriately, addressing unacceptable behaviour constructively.
- Encourage families to participate in community activities and plan for their future.
- Complete high‑quality records and written reports before the end of each shift, contributing to reviews and planning meetings.
- Work flexibly within the staff rota, including participation in sleep‑ins and on‑call duties.
- Engage in required training and take responsibility for ongoing professional development.
- Attend regular supervision and contribute to annual appraisal processes.
- Uphold professional standards and report any concerns about staff conduct to the line manager.
- Adhere to all health and safety requirements and workplace policies.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare or equivalent
Experience
- Experience working with children and families is desirable but not essential.

- Commitment to working with families from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to contribute to robust, fair, and evidence‑based assessments.
- Ability to drive (own or company vehicle).
- Confidence in managing challenging behaviour.
- Ability to support families with complex needs.
- Assertive, resilient, and able to maintain professional boundaries.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of confidentiality, data protection, safeguarding, and child protection.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
