Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Smoke Ventilation Designer to join our growing in-house design team based in Central London.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing smoke ventilation systems for a wide range of residential, hotel, commercial, and mixed-use developments, with a particular focus on refurbishment and office-to-hotel or residential conversion projects. Working alongside our MEP, design, and construction teams, you will develop compliant, practical, and efficient smoke control solutions from concept through to construction.
This is a full-time office-based role located in Piccadilly Circus, London, offering the opportunity to work on some of London's most exciting development projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Design smoke ventilation and smoke control systems in accordance with current UK regulations and standards
- Produce detailed smoke ventilation layouts, schematics, calculations, and technical drawings
- Develop natural and mechanical smoke ventilation strategies for residential, commercial, hotel, and mixed-use developments
- Coordinate smoke ventilation designs with architectural, structural, fire engineering, and MEP disciplines
- Prepare design reports, technical specifications, and supporting documentation
- Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors, manufacturers, and Building Control where required
- Ensure all designs comply with Approved Document B, BS 9991, BS 9999, BS EN 12101, and other relevant legislation
- Support project teams throughout design development, procurement, installation, and commissioning
- Review and resolve technical design queries throughout the project lifecycle
Requirements
- Proven experience designing smoke ventilation systems within the UK construction industry
- Strong understanding of smoke control principles, fire engineering coordination, and relevant British Standards
- Experience producing smoke ventilation calculations and technical drawings
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office (experience with Revit is advantageous)
- Experience working on residential, commercial, hotel, or mixed-use developments
- Good understanding of Building Regulations, fire safety legislation, and industry guidance
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work within tight deadlines
- Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Fire Engineering, or a related discipline is desirable
