We are seeking a compassionate, reliable and energetic individual to provide one-to-one care and support for an 11-year-old child with autism, who is non-speaking and has a severe learning delay.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children with additional needs and is looking to become an important, consistent part of a family’s support network.
The child is happy, affectionate, very active and enjoys exploring the world around him. He requires constant supervision to ensure his safety and wellbeing but presents with no behaviours that challenge through aggression or violence. We are therefore looking for someone who is calm, patient, proactive and physically fit, as the role involves keeping up with a busy and energetic child.
The role includes:
- Providing one-to-one supervision and support throughout the day.
- Planning and accompanying fun, stimulating outings and activities.
- Preparing and cooking meals and snacks.
- Cleaning up after meals and maintaining a clean environment relating to the child’s care.
- Supporting with all aspects of personal care and hygiene.
- Supporting with bedtime routines.
- Encouraging engagement in play, sensory activities and outdoor experiences, whilst also recognising that many activities are child-led.
- Maintaining a safe, nurturing and positive environment at all times.
- Transporting the child to activities and appointments.
Hours:This is a full-time position and will include weekdays, weekends and school holidays. Flexibility is essential.
Essential requirements:
- Previous experience supporting children or young people with autism and/or complex additional needs.
- A relevant childcare, health or social care qualification (such as Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development, Level 3 Early Years Educator, Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare, Level 3 Health & Social Care, or equivalent).
- A current Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one before employment).
- Full UK driving licence.
- Access to a reliable, insured vehicle suitable for work purposes.
- Excellent spoken English and good communication skills.
- The ability to remain calm, patient and adaptable in different situations.
- A good level of physical fitness to support an active child throughout the day.
Desirable:
- Experience supporting non-speaking autistic children.
- Knowledge of autism-specific approaches, sensory regulation and alternative communication methods (such as PECS, Makaton or AAC).
- Basic First Aid or Paediatric First Aid qualification.
