Purpose of the Role
The Yard Assistant is responsible for ensuring the yard operates safely, efficiently, and professionally. This includes preparing equipment for hire, cleaning and inspecting returned machinery, maintaining a tidy yard, assisting customers and drivers, and ensuring all plant and tools are presented to the highest standard.
The Yard Assistant plays a key role in delivering excellent customer service while supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the depot.
Key Responsibilities-
Equipment Preparation
- Clean, inspect and prepare plant, tools and equipment ready for hire.
- Carry out basic visual safety inspections before equipment leaves the depot.
- Fuel machines where required.
- Report any damage, defects or maintenance requirements immediately.
- Ensure all equipment is correctly labelled and stored.
Goods In / Goods Out
- Check returned equipment against hire paperwork.
- Identify missing items or damage and report findings.
- Load and unload customer and company vehicles safely.
- Assist HGV drivers with loading and securing machinery.
- Ensure all collections and deliveries are processed efficiently.
Yard Maintenance
- Maintain a clean, tidy and organised yard at all times.
- Sweep work areas and keep walkways free from hazards.
- Organise equipment into designated storage areas.
- Ensure waste is disposed of correctly.
- Keep storage areas and containers organised.
Customer Service
- Assist customers collecting and returning equipment.
- Help customers safely load equipment where appropriate.
- Provide a friendly, professional and helpful service.
- Direct customer enquiries to the Hire Desk when necessary.
Health & Safety
- Follow all company Health & Safety procedures.
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times.
- Report accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Operate equipment only when authorised and trained.
- Follow manual handling procedures.
- Maintain safe traffic management within the yard.
Stock Control
- Assist with regular stock checks.
- Report missing or damaged equipment.
- Ensure fleet numbers and identification labels remain visible.
- Help maintain accurate yard inventory.
General Duties
- Assist fitters with moving equipment where required.
- Support other departments during busy periods.
- Carry out general housekeeping duties.
- Undertake additional reasonable duties as requested by management.
- Represent the company professionally at all times.
Pay: Up to £30,000.00 per year
