Deputy Technical Lead Opportunity with the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), Supporting Sizewell C
As part of the CWA (Civil Works Alliance), you will support the building of Sizewell C. Sizewell C will be a 3.2-gigawatt power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes and will play a key role in our energy future, supplying reliable, clean electricity for at least 60 years. This role will be within the Enabling and Earthwork Section.
What will you do?
Technical Leadership & Governance
- Support the Technical Lead in managing the technical delivery of enabling and earthworks packages
- Ensure adherence to technical standards, specifications, and SZC governance requirements
- Provide day-to-day technical direction to engineers and design teams
- Deputise for the Technical Lead where required
Design Management & Coordination
- Oversee coordination of permanent and temporary works design
- Review technical submissions to ensure constructability, compliance, and integration
- Ensure alignment between design intent and site execution
- Manage interfaces across disciplines (civils, geotechnical, drainage, temporary works)
Engineering Assurance
- Support implementation of engineering assurance processes, including verification, validation, and approvals
- Ensure designs meet nuclear-quality standards, safety requirements, and regulatory expectations
- Assist in managing technical risks, assumptions, and constraints
- Interface with client assurance and Responsible Designer functions
- Provide technical expertise in:
- Bulk earthworks and cut/fill strategies
- Ground improvement and geotechnical engineering
- Site preparation and enabling infrastructure
- Drainage and environmental controls
- Ensure solutions are optimised for safety, cost, programme, and sustainability
Stakeholder & Interface Management
- Act as a key technical interface between:
- Construction and delivery teams
- Design consultants and subcontractors
- Temporary works coordination
- SZC client engineering and assurance teams
- Ensure effective communication of technical decisions and changes
Risk, Change & Issue Management
- Identify and manage technical risks and opportunities
- Support change control processes, ensuring impacts are assessed and documented
- Assist in resolving technical queries, non-conformances, and site issues
Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ)
- Promote a strong safety-first culture within all technical activities
- Ensure compliance with:
- CDM Regulations
- Nuclear site licence conditions
- SZC HSEQ standards
- Drive a right-first-time approach to design and delivery
People & Capability
- Support mentoring and development of junior engineers
- Contribute to building a high-performing technical team culture
- Encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing
What are we looking for?
Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline (essential)
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards (preferred)
Experience
- Experience on major infrastructure or nuclear projects
- Strong technical background in earthworks and enabling works
- Experience working within regulated, high-assurance environments
- Proven experience in design coordination and technical assurance
Technical Competencies
- Knowledge of:
- Earthworks design and specification
- Geotechnical engineering principles
- Temporary works processes
- Construction methodologies for large-scale civils
- Familiarity with UK standards and nuclear project requirements
