Registered Manager – Specialist Solo Children’s Home
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Salary: Circa £60,000 per year, plus performance bonuses
Job type: Permanent, Full-time
Create a safe, stable home for a child who needs specialist support
We are looking for an experienced Children’s Registered Manager to lead the development and opening of a specialist solo children’s home in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The home will support one child or young person with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioural difficulties, and moderate to complex needs. The child may require intensive 2:1 or 3:1 staffing, be subject to a court-authorised deprivation of liberty order, or be transitioning from an unregistered placement into a stable, regulated home.
This is an opportunity to build a truly personalised service around one child—creating the right environment, team and care model to help them feel safe, develop trusting relationships and make meaningful progress.
An established provider with support already in place
You will be joining an established organisation with a successful community support service and an existing registered children’s home.
You will have access to experienced operational leadership, established policies and systems, recruitment support and the knowledge of colleagues who understand the challenges of opening and operating specialist children’s services.
You will have the autonomy to shape the new home while benefiting from a strong support network around you.
Your responsibilities
As Registered Manager, you will:
- Lead the home through development, Ofsted registration and opening.
- Create a personalised care model based on the individual needs of the child.
- Develop the Statement of Purpose, policies, risk assessments and operational systems.
- Recruit, train and develop a skilled team capable of providing consistent 2:1 or 3:1 support.
- Build a stable, therapeutic and child-centred culture.
- Work closely with local authorities, social workers, families and clinical professionals.
- Carefully assess referrals and ensure the home can safely meet the child’s needs.
- Understand and implement any court-authorised restrictions relating to deprivation of liberty.
- Maintain compliance with the Children’s Homes Regulations, Quality Standards and Ofsted requirements.
- Lead safeguarding, quality assurance, staff supervision and continuous improvement.
- Manage staffing, rotas, budgets and operational performance.
- Ensure the child’s voice, wishes and feelings remain central to all decisions.
About you
You will be an experienced and resilient children’s residential leader with the confidence to build a specialist service around a child with complex needs.
You will need:
- Management experience within an Ofsted-regulated children’s residential setting.
- Experience supporting children with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioural difficulties, or associated complex needs.
- Experience managing services with intensive staffing arrangements such as 2:1 or 3:1 support.
- The qualifications, skills and experience required to register with Ofsted.
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare, or a recognised equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of safeguarding, the Children’s Homes Regulations and Quality Standards.
- An understanding of deprivation of liberty orders, restrictive practice and positive risk management.
- Experience recruiting, developing and retaining residential care teams.
- Strong leadership, communication and partnership-working skills.
- The ability to remain calm, organised and decisive in challenging situations.
Previous experience opening or registering a children’s home would be highly advantageous.
Salary and rewards
- Salary of circa £60,000 per year.
- Bonus on successful Ofsted registration.
- Further bonuses for achieving positive Ofsted inspection outcomes.
- Support from an established provider and experienced leadership team.
- Access to existing operational systems, policies and recruitment resources.
- The autonomy to recruit your team and shape the home from the beginning.
- Genuine opportunities to grow with the organisation.
This role offers the opportunity to create more than a service. You will build a stable and nurturing home around one child, giving them the consistency, safety and specialist support they need to move forward.
To apply, please submit your CV together with a short statement outlining your management experience and work with children who have complex support needs.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be subject to safer recruitment checks, including employment references, verification of employment history and an enhanced DBS check with the children’s barred-list check.
We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates from all backgrounds.
