We’re looking for an experienced, approachable and flexible HR Officer who’s enthusiastic about helping Newcastle Carers remain a great place to work. You’ll play a key role in supporting our staff so they can continue delivering outstanding service to unpaid carers of all ages across the city.
This is a proactive role within our Finance & HR team, working alongside colleagues who share our values of being empowering, inclusive, people-focused and empathetic. You’ll be involved in a range of HR activities, helping to keep things running smoothly day to day, supporting good practice across the organisation, and contributing to a positive and supportive workplace culture.
The role is based at Newcastle Carers’ office and includes, but is not limited to, the responsibilities and duties outlined in the full job description.

Key Responsibilities
Point of contact:
- Be a main point of contact for routine HR queries, both in person and via the HR inbox.
Recruitment administration:
- Process applications for shortlisting and support the interview process.
- Send offer letters, obtain references, and carry out DBS and right to work checks for selected candidates.
- Oversee the induction process and monitor probation reviews.
Other HR administration:
- Deal with contract amendments and leavers, including sending formal letters and overseeing the leaver process.
- Maintain records of DBS reviews and renewals.
- Provide administrative support for other HR processes as required.
Staff development and training:
- Monitor the completion of regular staff progress reviews and annual development reviews.
- Organise mandatory staff training, including working with partners where relevant.
- Maintain and update our organisational training plan and calendar to ensure that we are providing staff with a programme of training that meets their needs.
- Monitor training undertaken and identify any gaps in take-up.
- Identify new opportunities for staff development.
People HR:
- Manage attendance (including sickness and annual leave) on our online People HR system.
- Keep all personnel files on People HR up to date for auditing purposes and data protection.
Policies, procedures and staff handbook:
- Maintain and update our policy review calendar and ensure that policies are reviewed at the appropriate intervals.
- Co-ordinate policy updates and update the staff handbook as necessary.
- Share policy and procedure updates with the staff team, respond to queries, and identify any issues or improvements.
Trustee and volunteer support:
- Maintain Trustee records and paperwork.
- Arrange Trustee meetings and take minutes at Trustee subcommittee meetings.
- Support the volunteer recruitment and induction process.
Additional support for the Finance & HR Manager:
- The HR Officer will also be expected to provide some additional administrative support to the Finance & HR Manager.
Essential Skills
- An HR qualification (desirable)
- Experience in an HR role and knowledge of current good practice and processes
- Experience of working with confidential information and maintaining its security
- Good communication skills, both written and oral, and confident to communicate with a wide range of people using different methods.
- IT skills, preferably including Microsoft 365, including Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook
- Experience of using an online HR system (desirable)
- Excellent organisation and planning skills, including the ability to keep accurate records
- Good numeracy skills
- A strong team member, both within the Finance & HR team and within the organisation as a whole.
- Able to work independently and prioritise own workload
- Approachable and empathetic
- Open to change and innovation, and committed to continued improvement of Newcastle Carers’ procedures.
