Job Overview
We are looking for a Qualified Pharmacy Dispenser to join our busy mental health pharmacy based at Bowmere Hospital in Chester.
This is a fast-paced and varied dispensary role supporting mental health services. Unlike a traditional community pharmacy, we are not a face-to-face patient-facing pharmacy. Our service primarily works with hospital wards, clinics and healthcare teams, supplying medication safely and efficiently to support patient care.
The role will involve working within the dispensary as well as visiting wards and clinical areas within the hospital when required. Previous hospital or mental health pharmacy experience is not essential, as full training will be provided to help you become confident with our systems, procedures and ways of working.
A full UK driving licence is preferred, as the role may occasionally require travel or support across services.
Main Duties
- Accurately dispense and label prescribed medication in accordance with prescriptions, SOPs and pharmacy procedures.
- Carry out appropriate checks during the dispensing process and maintain a high level of accuracy.
- Support the preparation and supply of medication for mental health wards and clinics.
- Communicate effectively with ward staff, nurses, pharmacy teams and other healthcare professionals regarding medication supplies and queries.
- Visit hospital wards and clinical areas when required to support the pharmacy service.
- Assist with stock management, including ordering, receiving, putting away and rotating medicines.
- Monitor stock levels, expiry dates and outstanding medication supplies.
- Help ensure urgent and routine medication requests are prepared within the required timescales.
- Maintain accurate records and follow all relevant confidentiality, information governance and medication safety requirements.
- Work closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, dispensers and other members of the team.
- Support the smooth running of a busy dispensary, particularly during high-demand periods.
- Follow company procedures, SOPs and all relevant legal and professional requirements.
- Undertake additional training relevant to the role and mental health pharmacy services.
Qualifications & Skills
- Qualified Pharmacy Dispenser or an appropriate recognised dispensing qualification.
- Previous dispensing experience is desirable.
- Hospital or mental health pharmacy experience is advantageous but not essential, as full training will be provided.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to medication safety.
- Able to work accurately and efficiently in a busy, fast-paced environment.
- Good organisational and time-management skills.
- Confident communicating with healthcare professionals, clinics and ward teams.
- Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a pharmacy team.
- Comfortable visiting wards and different clinical areas within the hospital as part of the role.
- Reliable, professional and willing to learn new systems and procedures.
- Full UK driving licence preferred.
This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified dispenser who would like to develop their experience within a specialist mental health pharmacy environment. You will receive the training and support required to become familiar with our hospital services, systems and procedures while becoming an important part of a busy and supportive pharmacy team.
