Pay: £35.00 per hour

Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm

About the Role
Recruitment Unlimited is currently seeking an experienced Environmental Protection Officer to join a busy Regulatory Services team in Barnstaple on an initial 6-month contract.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Environmental Health professional to work within a Local Authority environment, managing a varied caseload and providing specialist advice across a range of environmental protection matters.
The role will involve investigating complaints, carrying out inspections and enforcement work, providing professional advice on planning and licensing matters, and working with internal departments and external agencies to protect public health and the environment.
Hybrid working may be available following interview and by agreement. Attendance at the Barnstaple office will be required on agreed days.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate and respond to environmental protection complaints and enquiries.
- Undertake inspections, investigations and enforcement action where appropriate.
- Provide professional environmental protection advice, including on planning and licensing consultations.
- Manage cases relating to statutory nuisance, air quality, contaminated land, industrial emissions, private water supplies and environmental issues associated with anti-social behaviour.
- Work closely with internal departments, external agencies and other stakeholders.
- Prepare reports, notices and legal documentation as required.
- Maintain accurate case records and ensure all actions are completed within agreed timescales.
- Manage your own caseload effectively while working to relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
- Contribute to the effective delivery of the Council's environmental protection and regulatory services.
About You
The successful candidate will have:
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Health.
- Registration with the Environmental Health Registration Board.
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
- Previous experience working in Environmental Protection within a Local Authority.
- Strong knowledge of relevant environmental legislation and enforcement procedures.
- Excellent investigation, communication and report-writing skills.
- The ability to manage a varied caseload and work independently.
- A professional and confident approach when dealing with members of the public, businesses and other stakeholders.
Essential Requirements
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Access to your own vehicle, as travel across the district will be required.
- Availability to work Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm.
- Ability to attend the Barnstaple office on agreed days.
- Relevant Environmental Health qualifications and professional registration.
