The Role
We're Geek, the agency with opinions. We don't just build websites; we question, refine and rethink how digital should work. No fluff, no empty promises, just honest, considered work.
We're looking for a Junior Frontend Developer to join our development team and grow into that mindset. You'll work directly alongside our designers, marketers and senior developer, genuinely embedded in a small team where every project matters and every voice counts.
Salary: £16,500 per annum (Pro-rata based on 22.5 hours per week; full-time equivalent £30,000).
This is a hands-on role. You'll be writing real code on real client projects from day one, across a mix of WordPress builds and modern JavaScript stacks, working closely and directly with our senior developer who'll guide, review and challenge your thinking day to day.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain responsive, accessible, mobile-first front-end interfaces for client websites
- Work across WordPress (using Salient and Elementor) as well as modern frameworks like React and Next.js
- Turn designs from our Creative team into clean, well-structured code, styled with Tailwind, Bootstrap, Sass/SCSS or plain CSS depending on the project
- Work closely with our development, design and marketing teams; collaboration isn't optional here, it's how we work
- Write maintainable, tested code and take part in code reviews
- Get exposure to backend basics (PHP, SQL/PostGres) where frontend and backend meet
- Learn our tools, processes and standards, and start forming your own opinions about what good frontend work looks like
- Help troubleshoot and fix issues across live client sites
How We Work
- We follow an agile approach: work is broken into stories and managed on a kanban board (Jira), so you'll always know what's next and why
- Version control through Git/GitHub, with proper branching and pull request review before anything merges
- Changes are built and tested in staging environments before ever touching a live client site
- We build mobile-first and take website performance seriously; part of your role will be writing tests that confirm your code does what it's supposed to, not just that it looks right
Working with AI
We use AI as a tool, not a shortcut. We're not looking for prompt writers. We want developers who understand what the code does, why it works, and when AI has got it wrong.
- Comfortable using AI tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude or similar) to speed up your workflow
- Able to read, understand and explain the code you ship, whether you wrote it or AI helped
- Willing to question AI output rather than accept it at face value: does it follow best practice, is it actually clean and scalable, does it fit our codebase
- Growing your own judgement so AI makes you faster, not lazier
What We're Looking For
- Solid grasp of HTML, CSS and JavaScript fundamentals
- Exposure to WordPress or a modern framework (React, Next.js, or similar), through work, study, or personal projects
- Curiosity and a willingness to ask "why" rather than just follow instructions
- Comfortable receiving direct, honest feedback; we don't sugarcoat, and we don't want you to either
- Confident communicating with clients, face to face and over the phone, not just with your team
- A portfolio, GitHub, or personal projects you can talk us through (not essential, but it helps)
- Based in or able to commute to Peterborough for hybrid working
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with TypeScript or similar JavaScript frameworks
- Exposure to PHP or basic backend/database concepts
- Experience with Tailwind or Sass in a real project
Why Geek
- Direct, hands-on mentorship from our senior developer, day-to-day, not occasional check-ins
- A genuinely small, tight-knit team, no layers of management, no getting lost in the noise
- Real client work and real responsibility, not busywork
- Growth in both technical skills (across our full stack) and non-technical skills like client communication and project management
- A culture built on honesty, knowledge and creativity; we'll tell you what's working and what isn't
Pay: £16,500.00-£17,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Casual dress
- Company pension
- Employee mentoring programme
- Free parking
