TRAINEE BID WRITER
Location: Bishop’s Stortford
Department: Pre-Construction / Bids
Reporting to: Bid Manager
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
About the Role
Carmelcrest is looking for an ambitious and organised Trainee Bid Writer to join our growing Pre-Construction team.
This is an entry-level position for someone with strong written communication skills, attention to detail and a genuine desire to develop. Previous construction or bid-writing experience is not essential.
Working alongside our Bid Team, you will help produce high-quality tender submissions for construction projects.
You will receive practical training in construction tendering, public-sector procurement and professional bid writing, with the objective of developing into an independent Bid Writer.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with tender submissions, PQQs, SQs and framework responses.
- Research and draft responses to tender questions.
- Review tender documentation and identify key submission requirements.
- Gather information from Pre-Construction, Operations, Commercial and SHEQ teams.
- Turn technical information into clear, concise and persuasive written responses.
- Help manage tender deadlines, trackers and submission requirements.
- Proofread submissions for accuracy, grammar, consistency and presentation.
- Support the preparation of tender interviews and presentations.
What We’re Looking For
We are not necessarily looking for someone who already understands construction or tendering. We are looking for someone with the underlying ability and attitude to become an excellent Bid Writer.
The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:
- Excellent written English and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Good research and analytical ability.
- Excellent organisation and time management.
- Ability to absorb unfamiliar information quickly.
- Confidence communicating with colleagues at all levels.
- Ability to work accurately to firm deadlines.
- Good Microsoft Word and PowerPoint skills.
- A proactive approach and willingness to learn.
- An interest in developing a career within construction and pre-construction.
Training & Development
The role will provide structured training and practical experience in:
- Construction tendering and procurement.
- Public-sector procurement and frameworks.
- Professional and persuasive bid writing.
- Tender analysis and compliance.
- Construction terminology and project delivery.
- Social value and sustainability submissions.
- Case studies and evidence development.
- Bid planning and management.
- Tender interviews and presentations.
As your knowledge and experience develop, you will take responsibility for increasingly complex tender responses and eventually manage sections of submissions independently.
What Success Looks Like
During the first 12 months, we expect the successful candidate to progress from supporting individual elements of bids to confidently researching and drafting tender responses under the supervision of the Bid Manager.
Success will be demonstrated through:
- High-quality, accurate written submissions.
- Consistently meeting deadlines.
- Increasing ability to work independently.
- Strong research and supporting evidence.
- Developing knowledge of our clients, projects and sectors.
- Positive response to feedback and continued improvement.
- Contribution to successful tender submissions.
Career Progression
Trainee Bid Writer → Bid Writer → Senior Bid Writer / Bid Manager
For the right individual, the position could also provide longer-term opportunities within Pre-Construction, Framework Management, Marketing or Business Development.
The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to build a professional career within a growing construction business. We are looking for someone with potential rather than a finished product someone who can write, think, research, organise themselves and wants to learn.
In return, we will provide the industry knowledge, practical experience and support required to develop into a high-quality construction Bid Writer.
