Boston Garage Equipment is one of the leading suppliers to the MOT and garage equipment industry, and we are looking for a new team member to join our product development team. This role spans electronics hardware design, firmware development and supporting software, with responsibility for taking products from concept through to production. You will work closely with other engineering disciplines to deliver robust, efficient, and maintainable custom electronic products.

Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop embedded hardware systems, including schematic capture and PCB layout
- Write, test, and maintain embedded firmware (C/C++ or similar)
- Develop supporting software tools (e.g. Python, desktop interfaces, test utilities)
- Integrate peripherals such as sensors, displays, communication modules, and storage
- Bring up new hardware and perform debugging using lab tools (oscilloscope, logic analyser, etc.)
- Optimise system performance, power consumption, and reliability
- Implement communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, BLE, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, MODBUS etc.)
- Support production, including test procedures and troubleshooting
- Document designs, code, and development processes
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience with embedded microcontrollers
- Proficiency in embedded C/C++
- Experience with RTOS or bare-metal systems
- Hardware design experience (schematics, PCB layout, component selection)
- Understanding of digital and analogue electronics fundamentals
- Experience with communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, etc.)
- Familiarity with version control systems (e.g. Git)
- Hands-on debugging and problem-solving skills
Desirable Skills
- Experience with wireless technologies (BLE, Wi-Fi)
- Knowledge of low-power design techniques
- Familiarity with compliance standards (CE, EMC)
- Experience with manufacturing and DFM/DFT practices
- Basic mechanical integration awareness (enclosures, connectors etc.)
