Night Warehouse Operative – Picker, Loader and Occasional Driver

Working hours
This is a permanent night and early-morning position.
During training:
12:00 midnight to 8:20am
Once fully trained and signed off:
2:00am to 10:20am
Each shift is 8 hours and 20 minutes on site and includes one unpaid 20-minute rest break. You will therefore be paid for 8 working hours per shift and 40 hours per week.
Applicants must be able to work both the training hours and the permanent hours. You must also have a reliable way of travelling to our Plymouth warehouse for these early start times.

Xlent Foods Ltd is a family-run wholesale foodservice business based in Plymouth. We supply food, drinks and catering products to businesses across Devon and Cornwall.
We are looking for a reliable and hard-working Night Warehouse Operative to pick customer orders and load our refrigerated delivery vehicles ready for the following day.
Once trained, you will be expected to work accurately and responsibly with limited supervision. Some driving will also be required, so a full UK driving licence is essential.
Pay and performance bonus
The basic rate of pay is:
£14.00 per hour
You can also earn an additional:
£1.00 per hour performance bonus
This brings the potential total rate to:
£15.00 per hour
The performance bonus is earned when assigned duties are completed properly, safely, accurately and to the company’s required standard.
This includes:
- Picking orders accurately
- Completing all assigned picking and loading duties
- Loading vehicles correctly and in delivery order
- Checking quantities, product codes, dates and product condition
- Following stock-rotation procedures
- Completing required paperwork
- Keeping the warehouse, fridge, freezer and loading areas clean and tidy
- Reporting shortages, damage and mistakes immediately
- Following food-safety and health-and-safety procedures
- Working at the expected pace without avoidable errors
- Arriving on time and being ready to start work at the scheduled time
The bonus will be based on clear performance standards that will be explained during training.
Based on 40 paid hours per week:
- Basic weekly pay: £560 gross
- Weekly pay with full bonus: £600 gross
- Basic annual equivalent: Approximately £29,120 gross
- Annual equivalent with full bonus: Approximately £31,200 gross
Main duties
Your responsibilities will include:
- Accurately picking customer orders using picking sheets and product labels
- Picking products from ambient, chilled and frozen storage areas
- Checking product codes, quantities, dates and condition
- Rotating stock correctly and reporting short-dated or damaged products
- Organising completed orders by customer and delivery route
- Loading refrigerated delivery vehicles safely and in the correct delivery order
- Making sure fragile products are not damaged during loading
- Carrying out regular lifting, carrying and manual handling
- Using pallet trucks and other warehouse equipment after training
- Keeping the warehouse, fridge, freezer and loading areas clean and tidy
- Reporting shortages, damaged stock or picking errors immediately
- Occasionally driving company vehicles for deliveries, collections or vehicle movements
- Completing other reasonable warehouse duties when required
Cold working environment
This role involves regularly working inside chilled and frozen storage areas.
You will frequently move between:
- Ambient warehouse areas
- Refrigerated storage areas
- Freezer storage areas
- The outside loading yard
- Refrigerated delivery vehicles
Applicants must be comfortable working in cold conditions and wearing the required protective clothing.
This is a physical role involving regular walking, standing, bending, lifting and moving cases of food and drink throughout the shift.

Essential requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a full, valid UK driving licence
- Be comfortable driving a 3.5-tonne refrigerated vehicle when required
- Be able to meet the company’s vehicle insurance requirements
- Be able to work from midnight during the training period
- Be able to work from 2:00am once fully trained
- Have reliable transport or another reliable way of getting to work
- Be comfortable working in chilled and frozen environments
- Be able to safely carry out regular manual handling
- Be reliable, punctual and trustworthy
- Be able to work accurately at a reasonable pace
- Be able to read product labels, picking documents and safety instructions accurately
- Be comfortable working with limited supervision once trained
Previous warehouse, order-picking, loading or delivery-driving experience would be helpful, but role-specific training will be provided.
