National Highways has an exciting opportunity within the North West region for a Technology Engineer, working with specialists and helping to improve the National Highway infrastructure and drive customer safety.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to play a key part in the development and delivery of roadside technology schemes across the strategic road network. As an Engineer within the Technology Asset Team, you will use your technical expertise, project management skills, and stakeholder engagement capabilities to identify asset needs and develop solutions that align with established asset policies, standards, and business objectives.
You will support the full lifecycle of roadside technology schemes, from identifying operational needs and developing options, through feasibility and design, to delivery, handover, and integration into maintenance. The role also provides valuable exposure to asset management activities, helping to ensure technology assets are effectively maintained and managed throughout their lifecycle.
With responsibility for the development and delivery of assigned schemes, you will be accountable for programme performance, budget management, and coordinating stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the required standards.
This position will be based in Manchester, Warrington, Penrith or Preston with a balance of remote and office-based work.

- Lead the development and delivery of roadside technology schemes, taking responsibility for programme planning, budget management, risk control, and the preparation of technical documentation and health and safety files in compliance with CDM 2015 requirements. Apply National Highways governance and delivery processes to ensure successful scheme outcomes.
- Manage and coordinate external suppliers and delivery partners, developing task briefs and work orders, leading progress reviews, monitoring performance, risks, budgets, and deliverables, and ensuring scheme requirements are delivered effectively through a range of contracts and framework agreements.
- Provide technical expertise and support across National Highways asset teams, contributing to the approval process through Safety Engineering Standards (SES), reviewing technical submissions, and ensuring contractor compliance with relevant standards, policies, and best practices.
- Undertake site inspections and asset investigations to assess the condition and performance of existing roadside technology assets, identify operational needs, and support the development of innovative and effective technology solutions.
About you.
- Degree or HND in a relevant discipline, with appropriate experience, or equivalent; and membership of a relevant professional body, or actively working towards professional membership.
- Knowledge of ITS (Intelligence Transport Systems)
- Demonstrate an understanding of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges standards and their application on the highways network.
- Demonstrate managing schemes, budgets and programmes.
- Experience in relevant construction and delivery methods and knowledge of CDM 2015
