Overview
Unitemps Staffordshire provide a range of support to students in receipt of Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) at the University of Staffordshire, and we are currently looking for an SpLD Study Skills tutors.
In this role you will provide support to students to develop skills required for effective study in Higher Education, to enable them to become independent learners. You will support students on a one-to-one basis to overcome barriers to learning that result as an impact of their specific learning difficulty.
Applicants must be willing to meet with students face-to-face if requested by the student, therefore must be local to Staffordshire or willing to travel
Roles and Responsibilities
- To deliver person-centred sessions in accordance with DSA and Unitemps guidelines.
- Plan and deliver tailored support sessions in a flexible, needs-led manner for assigned students, supporting them with:
- Structuring essays and other written work
- Critical and reflective thinking and research skills
- Comprehension, summarising, referencing and note taking
- Developing and implementing proof reading strategies
- Time management and other academic-related organisational skills
- Examination preparation/revision techniques
- Understanding and implementing feedback from academic staff
- Collaborate with students to identify and implement practical strategies to reduce barriers to learning and develop learning strategies.
- Record management and completion of documentation relevant to Specialist Study Skills sessions e.g., time sheets, record of session etc.
- Represent Unitemps in a professional manner and comply with all company policies and procedures.
Skills and Qualifications
- The successful applicant will possess the following qualities
- Experience of working with students with SpLD on a one-to-one basis.
- An in-depth understanding of the effects that SpLD on language and learning.
- Excellent communication, time management and organisational skills
- Be able to assess a student’s needs and with them establish an appropriate support plan
- An awareness of the strengths students with specific learning difficulties can bring to a learning situation
- An understanding of the needs, objectives and constraints of students and the ability to help students recognise their strengths and overcome barriers to learning.
- IT literate with the capability to offer online support if required.
Essential Qualifications
You MUST hold a professional membership with one of the following:
- The Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS) – Full, associate or affiliate professional membership
- British Dyslexia Association (BDA) - Full professional membership
- The Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education (ADSHE) - Professional membership
- Dyslexia Guild
- Associate Member (ADG)
- Associate Member (ADG FE/HE)
- Member (MDG)
- Fellow (FDG)

- Must be eligible to work in the UK
Pay: £32.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 1.0 per week
