1. Be part of a specialist team performing, analysing and reporting results of physiological measurements on children, requiring a considerable degree of accuracy, responsibility and autonomy.
2. To be able to perform and analyse with minimal supervision the physiological tests listed under ‘main tasks & responsibilities’ whilst maintaining excellent standards of patient care and clinical practice.
3. To assist lead physiological scientist in the day-to-day running of the service.
4. To assist lead physiological scientist in setting up & developing fledgling areas of the service e.g. cardiopulmonary exercise testing & home ventilator remote monitoring.
5. To assist with lectures and training of staff within the multidisciplinary team & trainees.
6. To demonstrate care and respect at all times, for both patients & colleagues.
7. To work towards STP equivalence once sufficient experience is obtained, with the help of lead physiological scientist.
8. To work in accordance with general Trust, occupational and professional guidelines.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities:
Patient Care (both direct and indirect)
- To undertake the following procedures listed under physiological tests, obtaining accurate results, following department protocols with minimal supervision.
Physiological Tests
o Cardiorespiratory polygraphy sleep studies
o Transcutaneous PCO2 monitoring & pulse oximetry
o Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)
o Multiple breath washout / Lung clearance index test (LCI)
o Spirometry with bronchodilator reversibility
- To score paediatric cardiorespiratory polygraphy sleep studies, generate the reports and present the findings to the respiratory MDT, following department and national guidelines.
- - To assist in analysing the data from cardiopulmonary exercise tests, generate the reports and assist in presenting the findings to the respiratory MDT.
- - To assist in the management of patients on non-invasive respiratory support.
- - To explain tests clearly to children in an age-appropriate manner to enable them to perform physiological tests, working with the child, family and multidisciplinary team members to obtain accurate results and achieve best possible outcomes.
- - To perform all relevant quality control and calibration procedures within the department including the performance of personal biological control procedures.

Training and Development:
- Participate in the teaching and training of members of staff, Healthcare Scientist/Medical trainees and students.
- Support and help present research projects carried out in the Department.
- Maintain continued professional development and statutory/ mandatory training, up to date skills and acquisition of relevant new skills to develop the service. Participate in relevant educational courses and meetings.
Leadership:
- In the absence of the lead physiological scientist take responsibility of the day-to-day running of the service.
- Be involved in developing standards of care, practice guidelines and where appropriate Care Pathways for patients.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of initiatives for the benefit of the identified client group, in conjunction with medical and AHP colleagues.
- Demonstrate and share clinical practice developments to provide evidence-based care, and contribute to service improvement in accordance with local policy initiatives.
- Contribute appropriately to clinical governance activities that relate to own area of practice and patient-client group.
- Support clinical and management teams in working towards an externally accredited scientific respiratory service
- Support the training provided by Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, for students on work placement and for trainees employed in the department.
- Support clinical and management teams in the delivery of Trust and Directorate objectives.
