Overview
We are looking for a reliable and experienced kitchen assistant or cook to join our team and support our two full-time chefs.
This is not a head chef position. The role is designed to provide day-to-day support in the kitchen, including food preparation, basic cooking, helping during service, pot washing, cleaning and general kitchen duties.
The position would suit either:
- An experienced chef who no longer wants the long hours and pressure of a busy full-time kitchen role, but still enjoys working in a kitchen; or
- Someone with some previous kitchen experience who is reliable, willing to learn and keen to develop their cooking skills.
Most of the time, you will work alongside and support our main chefs. However, we are looking for someone who can learn our menu and kitchen routines well enough to take on more responsibility when required, particularly when one of the chefs is on holiday.
You will not normally be expected to run the kitchen alone immediately. Full training will be provided, and the aim is for you to gradually become confident enough to work alongside one chef and help keep the kitchen running smoothly.
Responsibilities
- Assist with meal preparation and food service, ensuring timely delivery of dishes to customers
- Support the kitchen team with food safety procedures, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards throughout the kitchen
- Prepare ingredients for cooking, including chopping, peeling, and portioning as required
- Assist with catering events and large-scale meal preparations when needed
- Maintain organisation of kitchen equipment and supplies to ensure smooth workflow
- Serve food to customers in a courteous and professional manner
- Follow all health and safety regulations diligently to uphold a safe working environment
Main duties include:
- Assisting with food preparation
- Cooking simple menu items
- Supporting the chefs during service
- Pot washing and maintaining a clean kitchen
- Cleaning work surfaces, equipment and kitchen areas
- Receiving and storing deliveries
- Following food hygiene and safety procedures
- Helping with stock rotation and general organisation
- Providing additional support during staff holidays and busy periods
The ideal candidate will:
- Have some previous kitchen experience
- Be reliable, punctual and willing to work as part of a team
- Be comfortable with all kitchen duties, including cleaning and pot washing
- Be willing to learn our menu and cooking procedures
- Be able to remain calm and organised during busy periods
- Have a good understanding of food hygiene
- Be flexible with working hours when holiday cover is required
This is a varied support role rather than a senior chef position. We are looking for someone dependable who understands that every member of the kitchen team helps with cooking, cleaning and washing dishes when required.
Hours can be discussed depending on experience and availability.
