Location: Meadowfield Direct Services Depot, DH7 8XL, with work across properties within County Durham
Rate: £18.68 per hour
Work Pattern: Full-time, 37 hours per week

We're recruiting a Painter (Craft) to support painting, decorating, maintenance and repair services across council buildings and other client properties within County Durham. This is a key role for experienced painting and decorating professionals who can deliver high-quality work while maintaining excellent health, safety, customer service and professional standards.
About the Role
As a Painter (Craft), you'll carry out painting, decorating, maintenance and repair work in accordance with drawings, specifications and instructions. You will prepare surfaces, complete work to a high standard, maintain accurate records and ensure all activities comply with relevant health and safety legislation, policies and procedures.
The role requires someone who can work independently and as part of a team, communicate professionally with customers and colleagues, meet deadlines and contribute to the effective delivery of the Repairs and Maintenance service.
What You'll Be Doing
- Carrying out painting and decorating work to drawings, specifications and instructions
- Completing maintenance, repair and decoration work across council buildings and other client properties
- Preparing surfaces and completing work to a high standard and in line with customer requirements
- Following all relevant health and safety legislation, policies and procedures
- Maintaining and using personal protective equipment (PPE) to the required standards
- Recording completed work accurately for operational and financial purposes
- Communicating professionally with customers, colleagues and managers
- Working effectively as part of a team while also being able to work independently
- Attending relevant training and supporting continuous professional development
- Developing multi-skilled capabilities where required
- Contributing to the effective delivery and promotion of the Repairs and Maintenance service
- Carrying out other reasonable duties within the scope and responsibility of the role
Requirements
We're seeking an experienced Painter (Craft) with strong painting, decorating and maintenance skills and a commitment to delivering high-quality work. You'll ideally have:
- City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualification in Painting and Decorating
- Relevant trade apprenticeship
- At least two years' post-qualification experience in painting and decorating
- Proven experience completing painting, decorating and maintenance work to a high standard
- Ability to work independently and follow drawings, specifications and instructions
- Good knowledge of health and safety requirements for building and decorating work
- Ability to plan and organise work effectively and meet deadlines
- Good communication, teamwork and customer service skills
- Good organisational and numerical skills
- Ability to identify and resolve decoration and repair issues
- A flexible, reliable, punctual and self-motivated approach to work
- Valid driving licence for the required category, as the role involves driving a County Council vehicle
- Successful completion of the Council's in-house Driver Induction Assessment
- Commitment to equality, confidentiality, professional conduct and public service values
- Enhanced DBS disclosure, where required for the post
Nice-to-Have Requirements
- Experience working in both commercial and domestic environments
- Experience working with maintenance and contractual projects in industrial or commercial buildings
- Experience interpreting drawings and specifications to meet client requirements
- Relevant health and safety training
- Evidence of continuing professional development or willingness to undertake further training
- IT skills and experience using relevant applications
- Knowledge of relevant quality systems
- Understanding of local government services and working practices
