The MEP Field Superintendent is the on-site leader responsible for directing, coordinating, and overseeing all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installation activities associated with offsite-fabricated modules, process buildings, and associated field scopes. This role owns the day-to-day field schedule, crew coordination, subcontractor management, quality compliance, and safety enforcement from module delivery and set through mechanical completion and system startup. The MEP Field Superintendent is the primary point of contact between the project management team, trade foremen, owner representatives, and commissioning personnel. Primary responsibilities:
- Drive field MEP installation activities in alignment with the project CPM schedule, proactively identifying and mitigating critical path impacts and schedule risks.
- Develop, maintain, and execute short-term lookahead schedules to support efficient field operations and milestone achievement.
- Sequence and coordinate mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, controls, and insulation activities to eliminate trade conflicts and maximize productivity.
- Coordinate module and equipment deliveries with fabrication teams, ensuring field readiness, installation sequencing, and resolution of pre-shipment punch list items.
- Lead daily coordination meetings with trade foremen, subcontractors, vendors, and owner representatives to align work activities and resolve field issues.
- Monitor and report weekly progress, manpower utilization, productivity metrics, and schedule status to project leadership.
- Direct and supervise self-perform MEP crews, including pipefitters, plumbers, electricians, sheet metal mechanics, and insulation personnel, as well as specialty subcontractors.
- Assign daily work packages and verify crew composition, manpower levels, and production rates align with project requirements.
- Enforce subcontractor scope, schedule, safety, and quality requirements while holding trade partners accountable to project milestones.
- Manage field-directed changes, track time-and-material work, document scope deviations, and communicate impacts to project management.
- Oversee installation of process piping, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, hydronic and glycol systems, steam and condensate systems, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Verify installation of pipe supports, hangers, anchors, sleeves, and penetrations in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.
- Coordinate and witness hydrostatic, pneumatic, leak, and pressure testing activities, ensuring proper documentation and turnover records.
- Manage field integration and tie-in of fabricated skids, modules, equipment packages, and process systems.
- Coordinate electrical rough-in, conduit installation, cable pulling, terminations, equipment connections, and startup activities.
- Oversee installation of switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), transformers, lighting systems, instrumentation, and controls infrastructure.
- Verify electrical and controls installations against approved single-line diagrams, panel schedules, wiring schematics, and control drawings prior to energization.
- Coordinate temporary power requirements, utility connections, outages, and permanent power turnover with contractors and utility providers.
- Enforce project Quality Control Plans and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), ensuring required inspections and documentation are completed at designated hold and witness points.
- Conduct owner, client, and contractor walkdowns; develop, assign, track, and close punch list items across all disciplines.
- Maintain current revision-controlled drawings and documentation in the field; identify and process RFIs related to design conflicts and constructability issues.
- Verify incoming materials and equipment against approved submittals and specifications, rejecting non-conforming products prior to installation.
- Coordinate pre-functional testing, functional testing, commissioning activities, and system turnover with commissioning agents and project stakeholders.
- Enforce site-specific safety programs, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
- Lead daily toolbox talks, safety meetings, and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) reviews to reinforce safe work practices.
- Conduct field safety inspections and audits, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and closed in a timely manner.
- Manage incident reporting, near-miss investigations, corrective action plans, and injury documentation processes.
- Verify personnel qualifications, site access requirements, PPE compliance, and task-specific training prior to work execution.
- Prepare and submit detailed daily reports documenting manpower, completed work, equipment utilization, weather impacts, safety observations, and project challenges.
- Document RFIs, NCRs, field changes, delays, and potential claims through photographs, written reports, and supporting project records.
- Communicate proactively with project management regarding budget impacts, schedule risks, productivity concerns, and client relationship matters.
- Represent the company professionally during owner meetings, progress reviews, site inspections, and stakeholder engagements.
Required skills:
- Strong working knowledge of process piping systems, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical distribution installation methods and standards
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, piping isometrics, mechanical plans, electrical single-lines, panel schedules, and equipment drawings
- Familiarity with ASME B31.1/B31.3, NFPA 70/72/13, and applicable local plumbing codes
- Proficiency in scheduling tools (Primavera P6, MS Project, or equivalent) and daily reporting software
- Experience using construction management platforms (Procore, PlanGrid, or similar) for RFI, submittal, and punch list tracking
- Sustained work on active construction sites; exposure to all weather conditions, elevated structures, confined spaces, and energized systems
- Regular climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and module structures; ability to work at heights with fall protection
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs; extended periods of standing, walking, and field inspection
- Must be able to obtain and maintain client site badging, background checks, and drug screening as required
Qualifications:
- Journeyman-level trade credential (pipefitter, plumber, electrician, or sheet metal) with progression into field supervision—OR—Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- Minimum 8 years of MEP field experience, with at least 4 years in a superintendent or general foreman role
- Demonstrated experience supervising multi-trade crews of 15 or more personnel on industrial, commercial, or modular construction projects
- Prior experience with offsite-fabricated modules, process skids, or prefabricated MEP assemblies strongly preferred
- Required Certifications: OSHA 30-Hour Construction – active, Valid driver's license with clean record, and First Aid / CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days)
- Preferred Certifications: NCCER Pipefitting, Plumbing, or Electrical Superintendent credential, ASPE, ASHRAE, or trade-specific continuing education relevant to MEP systems, and Rigging and signalperson certification for module set operations
