Mobility Equipment Refurbishment Technician
About Sunshine Scooters:
Sunshine Scooters specialises in purchasing, refurbishing, repairing and selling quality used mobility scooters, powerchairs and other mobility equipment.
We don't simply clean up used equipment and sell it on. Every product that comes through our workshop goes through a refurbishment process to make sure it is properly cleaned, prepared, inspected and ultimately finished to a standard that we are happy to put our name to.
As the business continues to grow, we're looking for a Mobility Equipment Refurbishment Technician to join our workshop team in Rochford.
This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys practical, hands-on work and takes pride in making things look and feel their best.
You don't need previous mobility or engineering experience.
Initially, your role will focus heavily on cleaning and preparing used mobility equipment. However, for the right person, there will be the opportunity to learn more of the refurbishment and mechanical side of the business and develop towards a Mobility Equipment Engineer role.
What You'll Be Doing
A big part of this role is taking used mobility equipment and helping transform it into a product that's ready for its next customer.
Your initial responsibilities will include:
- Deep cleaning and preparing used mobility scooters, powerchairs and other mobility equipment
- Removing dirt, grease, stickers, residue and signs of previous use
- Cleaning and preparing plastics, upholstery, wheels and mechanical components
- Using appropriate cleaning equipment, chemicals and tools
- Polishing and finishing products ready for photography and sale
- Identifying damaged, worn or missing components during preparation
- Stripping products down where required to allow proper cleaning and refurbishment
- Reassembling equipment following cleaning and preparation
- Assisting engineers with the refurbishment process
- Helping maintain workshop stock, parts and equipment
- Keeping the workshop clean, safe and organised
- Moving and organising mobility equipment around the workshop and warehouse
- Assisting the wider workshop team where required
As your knowledge and ability develop, there will be opportunities to become involved with:
- Basic servicing and maintenance
- Replacing simple components
- Battery testing and replacement
- Basic electrical and mechanical fault finding
- Plastic repairs and plastic welding
- Preparing and spraying panels and components
- Pre-delivery inspections
- Assembling new equipment
- Supporting engineers with more complex repairs
The intention is for the responsibilities of the role to grow with your ability.
The Person We're Looking For:
Experience isn't the most important thing we're looking for in this position.
Attitude, reliability and pride in your work are.
At Sunshine Scooters, we expect our team to operate
Above the Line:
Ownership. Accountability. Responsibility.
That means if something goes wrong, we don't look for someone else to blame or make excuses. We acknowledge it, fix it, learn from it and move forward.
We're looking for someone who:
- Takes genuine pride in their work
- Has good attention to detail
- Doesn't consider a job finished until it's been done properly
- Takes ownership of their responsibilities
- Uses their initiative and looks for what needs doing next
- Is reliable and understands that other members of the team depend on them
- Is naturally practical and enjoys working with their hands
- Is organised and looks after their workspace, tools and equipment
- Can work independently while still being part of a team
- Is comfortable asking questions and learning from more experienced colleagues
- Wants to develop new skills and take on more responsibility over time
You don't need to already know how to repair a mobility scooter.
We're much more interested in finding someone with the right attitude and aptitude who wants to learn.
What You'll Need:
Essential:
- A practical, hands-on approach to work
- Strong attention to detail
- The ability to work methodically and follow processes
- A willingness to get stuck in – this can be a physical and sometimes dirty job
- A willingness to learn new technical skills
- Good reliability and timekeeping
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Desirable, but not essential:
- Previous cleaning, valeting or detailing experience
- Workshop or warehouse experience
- Automotive valeting or vehicle preparation experience
- Experience using hand or power tools
- DIY, mechanical or electrical interests
- Previous refurbishment or repair experience
- A full UK driving licence
Previous mobility industry experience is not required.
Full training will be provided by our workshop and engineering team.
What We Offer:
- £25,000 – £27,000 salary, depending on experience
- Monday to Friday working
- 8:00am – 4:00pm hours
- Optional overtime during busy periods
- Full product and workshop training
- The opportunity to learn mechanical and electrical repair skills
- A genuine progression route into a Mobility Equipment Engineer position
- A varied role working with many different products and manufacturers
- A growing business where additional responsibility and development are encouraged
What Success Looks Like:
We're looking for someone who takes satisfaction from seeing the difference between a product when it arrives and when it leaves the workshop.
Someone who notices the dirt in the corner that somebody else might miss. Who spots the damaged trim while they're cleaning it. Who doesn't put something through to the next stage knowing it isn't quite right.
As you become more experienced, we want you to start asking why something isn't working, not simply whether it's clean.
You'll learn from our engineers, gradually take on more technical work and, if you have the ability and ambition, develop towards becoming a fully-fledged Mobility Equipment Engineer.
For us, this isn't necessarily the end position. It can be the starting point of a career within our engineering team.
