Position: Yard Operative/Relief Driver
Salary: £30,000.00 - £40,000.00 DOE
Location: Huddersfield
Shift: Monday – Friday Days (45hrs)
Yard Operative/Relief Driver - About the Role
We are currently seeking a reliable and hardworking Yard Operative / Relief Driver to join our team in Huddersfield. This is a hands-on, physically active role that plays a vital part in ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of our depot operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a clean, organised, and safe yard environment, as well as supporting operational activities including machinery handling and occasional driving duties.
Yard Operative/Relief Driver - Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the cleanliness, organisation, and overall presentation of the yard and storage areas
- Ensure all equipment and machinery is stored correctly in designated locations
- Inspect machines upon return from hire, including basic checks, cleaning, and refuelling
- Wash down machinery and clean vehicle cabs to a high standard
- Move machinery to and from loading bays for drivers and customers
- Assist workshop staff with the movement and positioning of equipment
- Operate a Forklift Truck (FLT) to safely transport equipment around the yard
- Ensure compliance with health & safety and environmental standards at all times
- Remove waste materials and keep the yard free from hazards
- Provide cover as a relief driver (up to 7.5T vehicle) during holidays and absences, delivering light plant equipment to customers
Yard Operative/Relief Driver - Skills & Experience Required
- Full UK driving licence (essential)
- Previous experience in a similar yard, construction, or plant environment (desirable)
- Forklift Truck (FLT) experience or certification (advantageous)
- Experience operating or moving construction/plant equipment (beneficial)
- Good understanding of health & safety practices
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Yard Operative/Relief Driver - Physical Requirements
This role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions and includes manual handling tasks. Candidates must be physically fit, capable of lifting and moving equipment, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, active environment.
