You’ll be joining an experienced engineering team working on specialist heavy machinery where quality workmanship and practical problem-solving are essential.
About the position
Due to continued growth, we are recruiting an experienced Welder / Machinist to join our engineering team at our headquarters in Boston, Lincolnshire.
This is a fully workshop-based position combining welding and fabrication with machining, line boring and specialist bore repairs on heavy plant and vacuum excavators.
The successful candidate will have access to a well-equipped fabrication and machining workshop, including horizontal boring and radial arm drilling machinery, as well as cranes and lifting equipment.
We are particularly interested in experienced welders who also have machining experience.
Role
The role will involve a combination of welding, fabrication and machining, with particular emphasis on repairing worn and damaged components rather than simply replacing them.
Typical work will include line boring worn pivot points and bushes, rebuilding damaged bores through welding and machining, drilling and boring heavy components, structural fabrication and general heavy plant repairs.
You’ll be expected to assess damaged components, determine an appropriate repair method and carry out the work accurately to the required tolerances.
This position is workshop based at our Boston headquarters with no field-based or mobile work required.Appropriate training for the required machinery will be provided, if needed, for the right candidate.
Key responsibilities
- Line boring worn or damaged bores on heavy plant and vacuum excavators
- Bore rebuilding and repair, including welding and machining back to specification
- Operating horizontal boring machinery
- Operating radial arm drills and other workshop machinery
- MIG and MMA welding and fabrication
- Structural and heavy fabrication repairs
- Machining and modification of components as required
- Measuring components and working accurately to specified tolerances
- Assessing damaged components and determining suitable repair methods
- Supporting full machine refurbishments and new-build projects
- Carrying out general fabrication and engineering repairs
- Working from engineering drawings, measurements and job sheets
- Maintaining a high standard of workmanship and workshop safety
Essential requirements
- Strong welding and fabrication experience
- MIG and MMA welding capability
- Practical mechanical and engineering ability
- Ability to accurately measure components and work to tolerances
- Ability to assess repair requirements and work independently
- Experience operating fabrication or machining equipment
- Own hand tools
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable experience
- Line boring experience
- Bore repair and bore reclamation experience
- Horizontal boring machine experience
- Radial arm drill experience
- Manual machining experience
- Lathe or milling machine experience
- TIG welding capability
- Experience repairing heavy plant, HGVs, agricultural or industrial machinery
- Experience with hydraulic machinery
- Familiarity with vacuum excavators or similar specialist plant
Candidates do not necessarily need experience in every machining discipline. An experienced welder/fabricator with good machining experience and the aptitude to be trained in specialist line boring and bore repair work would also be considered.
Remuneration and benefits
- £40,000–£60,000 per year depending on experience and overtime
- Minimum 50 hours worked per week
- Paid overtime at 1.5x for hours worked over 50 hours per week
- Saturday at 1.5x
