General Description:
Skilled work which demands a standard of competence necessitating either an apprenticeship to a trade or recognised
training programme where an employee is required to be fully qualified in all parts of the trade and capable of producing
work to the required standards, specification or finish expected of a craftsman. To perform defined tasks to written
instructions and to be able to work to their own initiative to enable the Depot to provide a quality service to the business.
This role requires an ability to work in both core and non-core trades.
Responsibilities:
- Competent to use sharp tools; chisels, saws, planes
- Competent to use mechanical machines; hand saw, benchsaw
- Competent to use handtools; electric pump screwdriver, spanners and torque wrenches, portable circular saws, jigsaw
- Competent to work in GRP and woods
- Competent to strip and rebuild vehicle interiors; luggage racks, seat frames, buffet cars
• Competent to remove interior panels on vehicles • Competent to re-insulate panels
• Competent to strip, remove and rebuild floor paneling and plywood flooring; renew by cutting to specified shape •
Competent in assembly work
- Competent to self-certificate work
Education Requirements/Person Specification:
- Equivalent to GCSE C or above in Maths and English.
- Indentured apprenticeship in Vehicle Building with supporting industry recognised ITB certificate along with City and
Guilds 3850 certificate showing evidence of academic theory of trade.
- Equivalent qualification – NVQ level 3 in trade along with CVA certificate to support.
- Previous experience in Railway Rolling stock an advantage but not essential
- Have a strong understanding of 5s
- Awareness of the importance of Quality

pressure within tight deadlines.
