Community Learning Volunteering – Help Adults From Refugee Backgrounds Build Confidence in English and Numeracy
Every week, you could help someone read a letter, follow a recipe, or manage their own money with a little more confidence. Katherine Low Settlement is looking for volunteers to support adults from refugee and migrant backgrounds through our Community Learning programme in Battersea.
Location: Battersea, London
Time: 1.5 hours a week (term time)
Commitment: Minimum 6 months, starting from your first session

This is hands-on and human. You support adults to build confidence in English literacy and numeracy in small, friendly groups. No teaching experience needed, you bring patience, clear communication, and respect.
Pick one session and commit to it for the term
Reading and Writing Together — Mon 10:00-11:30am & 12:30-2:00pm, Tues 10:00-11:30am
Everyday reading, spelling and short practical writing.
Conversation Club — Tues 12:30-2:00pm
Themed discussions to build spoken English confidence.
Confidence with Numbers / Numeracy — Thurs 12:30-2:00pm
Everyday maths skills to build confidence with numbers.
Please apply for one session that fits your weekly availability. Volunteers stay in their chosen slot for the term rather than moving between sessions. Most tell us the relationships they build are the best part, and that's why we ask for 6 months: so learners see the same face each week.
Spaces for the September term (starting WC 14th September) are limited, though onboarding runs year-round. You're welcome to apply anytime and join a session once a space opens.
What you'll do
Support small groups with reading, writing, speaking, listening or numeracy.
Keep sessions moving; model clear, patient communication.
Encourage quieter learners to have a go.
Work alongside tutors and other volunteers.

No teaching experience required; training provided.

Volunteer application and short chat.
DBS check and ID verification (we'll guide you).
KLS Volunteer Induction before you start.
