General Manager – The Abbey Sports Bar & Kitchen, Gloucester
Location: Gloucester
Job Type: Full-time / Permanent
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
About The Abbey
The Abbey Sports Bar & Kitchen is a lively sports-led venue in Gloucester, combining live sport, great drinks and a varied food offering in a welcoming, energetic atmosphere.
Our kitchen serves everything from pizzas and burgers to pub favourites and main meals, while the bar is built around creating a great atmosphere for live sport, weekends and events.
We're now looking for an experienced and commercially minded General Manager to take ownership of the venue and lead it into its next stage.
The Role
This is a hands-on General Manager position for someone who knows how to run a successful hospitality business.
You'll have overall responsibility for the day-to-day operation of The Abbey, including sales, profitability, team performance, customer experience, food and drink standards, events and compliance.
We want someone who doesn't simply maintain the business, but actively looks for opportunities to grow sales, build a strong team and make The Abbey one of Gloucester's go-to venues for live sport, food and drinks.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the venue
- Recruit, train, motivate and develop a strong management and front-of-house team
- Deliver excellent customer service and consistently high operating standards
- Drive weekly sales and identify opportunities to grow the business
- Maximise major sporting events, weekends and key trading occasions
- Work closely with the kitchen team to maintain food quality, consistency and speed of service
- Manage labour effectively in line with sales and business requirements
- Control stock, wastage and operating costs
- Monitor sales, margins and overall venue profitability
- Manage rotas, holidays and staffing levels
- Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the venue
- Ensure licensing, health & safety, food safety and company procedures are followed
- Handle customer feedback professionally and effectively
- Develop local events, promotions and initiatives to increase footfall
- Build relationships within the local Gloucester community
- Lead from the front and create a positive, accountable team culture
What We're Looking For
Ideally, you'll already be working as a General Manager, Deputy Manager or experienced Assistant Manager within a busy pub, sports bar, restaurant or late-night hospitality environment.
You'll need to be:
- Commercially aware and confident working with sales, labour and GP targets
- Experienced in leading and developing hospitality teams
- Comfortable managing a busy food and wet-led operation
- Passionate about delivering excellent customer experiences
- Strong at planning and maximising major sporting occasions
- Confident managing busy weekend and evening services
- Organised, reliable and able to make decisions independently
- Proactive about increasing sales rather than simply managing existing trade
- A strong communicator who leads by example
Experience within a sports-led venue or high-volume pub/bar would be a strong advantage.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary based on experience
- Performance-related opportunities
- Staff discount
- Autonomy to manage and develop the venue
- Support from an experienced hospitality business
- Opportunity to influence events, promotions and the future direction of The Abbey
- Career progression as the business grows
