Design Beautiful Buildings. Finish Every Thursday.
For over 45 years, Hampton Conservatories has designed and manufactured luxury timber conservatories and orangeries for discerning customers throughout the UK, Ireland and around the world.
Our structures are one-offs. Timber joinery, structural steel and glass, built into period homes, listed buildings and some of the finest properties on the island. No two are ever the same, and every drawing that leaves our design office is built.
We are looking for an experienced CAD Design Technician to join our design team, working alongside our Head of Design.
And we work a four day week. Monday to Thursday, every Friday off, all year round. Not a trial, not a rota — it is simply how we work.
The Role
You will own projects from the first sketch through to the finished structure standing on site.
– Turn surveys and architects' drawings into dimensioned design proposals — elevations, frame plans and roof plans — for our design consultants to present to clients.
– Configure designs from our library of standard blocks and elements, founded on classical architectural principles and working within the constraints of the existing building.
– Cost and quote your approved proposals.
– Develop sold projects into full working drawings and job cards — stock sheets, glass sheets and cutting lists — for the workshop.
– Detail where the joinery meets the steelwork, and where the whole structure meets the existing building. This is the heart of the job.
– Prepare and submit planning, listed building consent and building control applications, and liaise with planners and conservation officers through to decision.
– Work with structural engineers and build their calculations into your drawings.
– Use AI tools and other modern software to work faster and to a higher standard.
– Help develop and improve our design systems, standard details and templates.
About You
Three things matter most to us, and we are firm on all three:
– Joinery — you have come from a joinery, shopfitting or bespoke timber manufacturing background. You know how timber is machined, jointed and assembled, and what can realistically be made in a workshop.
– Metalwork — you understand structural steel and fabrication, and specifically how steelwork and joinery are married together: fixings, tolerances, movement, load transfer and concealment.
– Building construction — sound general construction knowledge and a working understanding of the Building Regulations as they apply to this type of structure.
Alongside that, we are looking for someone who:
– Is fully trained and currently productive in AutoCAD 2D. 3D is a bonus, not a requirement.
– Can develop and draw design proposals with minimal supervision — this is not a training position.
– Is systems minded. We design from standard blocks, not a blank sheet, and we work to defined processes with proper revision control.
– Sees where a process could be better, and says so.
– Works a problem through and finds a way forward rather than passing it back.
– Is comfortable learning and using AI technology as part of their daily work.
– Has a genuine interest in premium products, design and quality craftsmanship.
– Wants to build a long-term career with an ambitious and growing business.
Desirable: 3D modelling or visualisation; experience of planning, listed building consent or building control applications; an eye for classical design and proportion.
Why Join Hampton?
– A four day week — every Friday off, all year round. A three day weekend, every week, on a full salary.
– Join a company with over 45 years of craftsmanship and manufacturing expertise.
– Work on genuinely bespoke, high value projects — period properties, listed buildings and landmark homes. No two projects are the same.
– See what you draw actually get built. Your drawings go straight to our own workshop, a few steps from your desk.
– Own the whole project, not a slice of it — from first sketch through planning to manufacture.
– £30,000 to £35,000 and 24.5 days holiday.
– A small, experienced and supportive design team where your work is visible and your ideas are heard.
– Excellent opportunities for personal development as the business continues to grow.
– Based on the North Coast, minutes from Portrush.
If you have come up through the workshop and want your joinery knowledge to count for something on the drawing board, we would love to hear from you.
Send your CV and, if you can, a couple of sample drawings. We would rather see your detailing than read about it.
