Bricklayer / Hard Landscaper
Hampshire & Dorset Landscapes Ltd are seeking an experienced and capable Bricklayer / Hard Landscaper to join our growing landscaping and construction team.
This is a hands-on role primarily suited to an experienced bricklayer who is confident producing high-quality brick and block work, while also being willing to assist with a wider range of hard landscaping and general construction works.
The role is not limited to large-scale house building or repetitive new-build brickwork. Our projects vary considerably and typically involve garden construction, landscaping, walls, steps, paving, retaining structures, shed bases and smaller bespoke building works.
We are looking for somebody who takes pride in their workmanship, can work independently and is comfortable completing a varied range of practical construction tasks.
Pay: £25–£32 per hour depending on experience and proven ability
Duties
- Carry out high-quality brick and block work
- Construct garden walls, retaining walls, piers, steps and raised planters
- Carry out repairs, alterations and rebuilding of existing masonry
- Set out brickwork accurately including levels, lines, dimensions and finished heights
- Mix and prepare mortar to the correct consistency
- Maintain consistent joints, bond patterns and overall finish
- Cut bricks, blocks and masonry accurately using appropriate tools and machinery
- Carry out pointing and finishing work to a high standard
- Install coping stones, pier caps and other masonry finishes
- Assist with porcelain and natural stone paving installations where required
- Construct steps, edging and other hard landscaping features
- Carry out small concrete works including shed bases, pads and foundations
- Assist with groundwork, excavation and sub-base preparation where required
- Construct sleeper and other retaining structures
- Work independently on smaller projects when required
- Work alongside landscapers and general operatives on larger projects
- Read and work accurately from drawings, dimensions and specifications
- Identify practical issues and make sensible decisions on site
- Maintain a safe, tidy and organised working environment
- Operate power tools and construction equipment safely
- Communicate professionally with customers while working on site
- Report progress, material requirements and any issues to the company director
Practical Skills Required
Applicants should have strong practical experience in bricklaying and masonry work, ideally including:
- Face brickwork
- Block work
- Garden walls
- Brick piers
- Retaining walls
- Steps
- Raised planters
- Copings and caps
- Brick and block repairs
- Repointing
- Setting out
- Foundations
- Mortar preparation
- Accurate finishing
Experience in the following areas would also be highly advantageous:
- Porcelain paving
- Natural stone paving
- Groundworks
- Drainage
- Concrete bases
- Shed bases
- Sleeper work
- Decorative edging
- Fencing
- General hard landscaping
You do not need to be a specialist landscaper in every area.
The most important requirement is that you are a genuinely competent bricklayer who produces clean, accurate and professional work.
Training and support can be provided for other areas of landscaping where required.
Requirements
- Strong previous experience as a bricklayer or mason
- Able to demonstrate a good standard of completed work
- Confident working independently
- Strong understanding of levels, lines, bonds and setting out
- Good attention to detail
- Able to produce consistently neat mortar joints and finishes
- Comfortable carrying out both new work and repairs
- Able to read basic drawings and measurements
- Reliable and punctual
- Good problem-solving ability
- Comfortable working outdoors throughout the year
- Physically capable of carrying out practical construction work
- Full UK driving licence required
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for somebody who genuinely takes pride in their brickwork.
You should be confident being given a drawing, dimensions and materials and being trusted to complete the work correctly without needing constant supervision.
Quality is extremely important to us.
We are not looking for someone who can simply get bricks in the wall quickly. Finished appearance, accurate levels, consistent joints, correct preparation and overall workmanship are equally important.
The role will involve varied work rather than carrying out the same task every day, so we are particularly interested in practical individuals who enjoy working across different types of projects.
One week you may be constructing a garden wall or brick piers, while another may involve paving, steps, a shed base, retaining work or general landscaping construction.

Progression
For somebody who demonstrates strong workmanship, reliability and the ability to work independently, there is genuine opportunity to take on greater responsibility over time.
This could include taking responsibility for individual projects, working with an additional labourer or landscaper and progressing into a senior site role.
