About the role
We're a private household looking for a reliable, friendly and organised housekeeper to help keep our home running smoothly - a long-term position for someone who takes real pride in a well-kept home. The house sits in about two acres, with an annexe and a home gym.
You'd be with us 3 days a week, five hours at a time, trusted with the run of the house and working to a simple weekly plan we'll agree together.
We care as much about how the house looks as how clean it is and we'd love it to feel immaculate at all times, so an eye for detail matters more to us than raw speed.
What this role is really about
The point of this job is to make our lives simpler, not to give us something else to manage. We want someone who sees what needs doing and gets on with it, spots the thing that is about to become a problem and mentions it, and does not need chasing. If you like taking ownership of a house and being trusted to run it, this will suit you. If you would rather be handed a list each morning, it will not.
Reliability matters as much as the work does. We plan our week around these 3 days, so we need them to be dependable. Genuine things come up and we will always be understanding, we just ask for as much notice as you can give, and we will do the same for you.
The list will also change over time. Once the house is properly on top of itself the heavy cleaning eases off and the hours go into the lighter things instead - organising, errands, keeping everything looking its best. The hours stay the same; the mix shifts. So we are after someone happy to turn their hand to whatever is most useful that week rather than wanting a fixed list. Nothing unreasonable, and nothing outside your hours, but a willing 'yes, I'll sort that' is the most valuable thing you can bring.
What the job involves
Not everything below happens every visit, the heavier and seasonal jobs work on a rotation, so each day stays manageable.
Cleaning
- Hoovering, mopping and dusting throughout
- Bathrooms - toilets, showers, baths, sinks and mirrors
- Kitchen - surfaces, hob, sink, splashbacks and appliance exteriors
- Home gym - a weekly clean and wipe-down
- Polishing furniture
- Deep cleaning on rotation - skirting boards, behind furniture, inside cupboards
- Inside appliances on rotation - oven, microwave, fridge, kettle
- Seasonal deep-cleans - a spring clean and a tidy-up before Christmas
Laundry, linen & guest rooms
- Washing, drying, folding and putting away
- Minimal ironing - we rarely need it
- Changing beds and making them up with fresh linen
- Making up the annexe rooms for guests when required
Kitchen & tidying
- Loading, running and unloading the dishwasher
- Emptying bins, managing rubbish and recycling
- Simple meal prep - a couple of easy gluten-free dishes kept in the fridge ready to heat, such as chicken, steak or tuna pasta (recipes provided)
The finishing touches
- Living areas tidied, surfaces kept clear, everything back where it lives
- Fridge and cupboards properly organised - labels facing out, oldest at the front
- Windows, glass doors, mirrors, chrome and taps left streak-free
- Cushions, throws and beds dressed properly, not just made
- The house left guest-ready at the end of every visit
Organisation & errands
- Organising cupboards, wardrobes and storage
- Keeping the stock list topped up - food, toiletries, cleaning products
- Grocery shopping and household supply runs
- Errands - dry cleaning, post office, returns, prescriptions
- Handling post and mail, and watering the indoor plants
- A household card is provided for all shopping and ordering
Keeping the house ticking over
- Letting in deliveries, tradespeople and contractors
- Booking in and overseeing other trades (window cleaner, gardener, maintenance)
- Flagging repairs and anything that needs attention
Dogs (later on)
We'll be getting dogs in due course. We have around two acres, so they will be exercised here on the property rather than walked off it - no lead walks or driving anywhere. Once they arrive, we'd love help with feeding and fresh water, letting them out into the grounds and keeping an eye on them, towelling off muddy paws, and keeping their beds and bowls clean. A genuine fondness for dogs is a big plus.
How we like things done
We're fairly particular about how the house is kept, and we'd rather say so upfront than surprise anyone later. Clothes folded the same way each time and hung by colour, the fridge and cupboards properly organised, everything going back where it lives. It is the detail that matters to us - nothing complicated, just consistent.
We'll show you how we like things set up and we're happy to write it down, so there's no guesswork. After that it's yours to run. If you take quiet satisfaction in a well-ordered wardrobe and a room that looks properly finished, you'll enjoy this house.
