Job Summary
We are recruiting experienced Band 5 Registered General Nurses (RGNs) to support healthcare services within a secure custodial setting.
The role involves delivering high-quality, patient-centred nursing care for adult patients within a prison healthcare environment. The post holder must be confident working independently within a structured multidisciplinary team, managing a wide range of physical health needs while promoting safe, effective clinical practice.
This is ad-hoc locum work, with forward planning available and regular opportunities to secure shifts in advance, as well as long-term locum contracts for suitable candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality nursing care in line with NMC standards and local policies.
- Undertake patient assessments and develop, implement and evaluate individualised care plans.
- Administer medications safely and accurately in accordance with prescribing guidance.
- Respond appropriately to acute and emergency presentations within the prison healthcare setting.
- Carry out clinical procedures including wound care, venepuncture, ECGs and chronic disease monitoring where competent.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with service standards.
- Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Promote health education, wellbeing and disease prevention.
- Adherence to NHS policies, prison healthcare procedures and clinical governance.
Essential Requirements
- NMC-registered Adult Nurse (RGN).
- Proven experience within NHS or secure healthcare settings.
- Ability to work autonomously and manage workload effectively.
- Strong clinical assessment, communication and documentation skills.
- Current prison clearance.
- Enhanced DBS.
- Right to work in the UK.
Desirable
- Experience within prison or secure healthcare environments.
- Experience managing long-term conditions and urgent primary care presentations.
- Experience working within a multidisciplinary team.
- Previous NHS Band 5 experience.
