Berry & Escott is a well-established mechanical engineering company based in Bridgwater, Somerset.
We design, manufacture and install engineering solutions for customers across the General Industrial and Utilities sectors.
We're looking for a practical and reliable Site Installation Technician to join our team, primarily installing pre-fabricated galvanised steel structures and associated mechanical equipment on utility and industrial sites.
This is a hands-on role for someone with good mechanical knowledge who enjoys building and installing things, solving practical problems and taking pride in seeing a job completed properly.
You'll work as part of our site installation team on customer sites, where conditions and challenges can vary from project to project. You'll therefore need to be adaptable, comfortable working outdoors and able to think practically when the reality on site doesn't quite match what was expected.
What You'll Be Doing
Your work will include:
- Installing pre-fabricated galvanised steel structures and associated mechanical equipment.
- Assembling, positioning, levelling and securing steelwork and mechanical components.
- Drilling, bolting, fixing and aligning equipment and structures.
- Working from engineering drawings, measurements and installation instructions.
- Using hand tools, power tools and installation equipment safely and correctly.
- Checking dimensions, levels and alignment to ensure installations are accurate.
- Working alongside colleagues, customers, subcontractors and other site teams.
- Identifying and solving practical installation problems as they arise.
- Recognising when a problem needs to be escalated rather than simply working around it.
- Looking after tools, equipment, finished components and customer property. Maintaining a clean, organised and safe working area.
- Representing Berry & Escott professionally when working on customer sites.
Problem-Solving
Site installation rarely goes exactly as it looks on a drawing.
We're therefore looking for someone who can think practically, assess a problem and help find a safe and effective solution.
That might mean identifying a dimensional issue, working out the best sequence for an installation, spotting that something doesn't line up correctly or recognising that site conditions differ from the original information.
We want someone who asks, "How do we solve this properly?", while understanding when they need to stop and seek advice rather than making an unauthorised change.
Working Environment
This is a genuine site-based position, so you need to be comfortable with the realities of working on industrial and utility sites.
The role will involve:
- Working outdoors throughout the year and in varying weather conditions.
- Working on operational utility and industrial sites.
- Working at height when appropriately trained and equipped.
- Potential confined-space working when appropriately trained and authorised.
- Wearing appropriate PPE.
- Working around steelwork, mechanical equipment and construction activities.
- Travelling to customer sites.
- Early starts.
- Occasional overnight stays where required by the project location or programme.
Appropriate training will be provided where required.
About You
You don't necessarily need to have done this exact job before.
We're more interested in finding someone with the right combination of mechanical ability, practical thinking, reliability and attitude.
You'll ideally have:
- Good practical mechanical knowledge.
- Experience using hand and power tools.
- A practical approach to problem-solving.
- The ability to take accurate measurements and work carefully.
- Good attention to detail.
- An understanding of engineering drawings would be advantageous.
- Previous mechanical installation, construction, engineering or site experience would be beneficial.
- Experience within utilities, water or industrial environments would be an advantage.
- A strong awareness of Health & Safety.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- A willingness to learn and develop new skills.
Previous Working at Height, Confined Space, CSCS or other relevant site qualifications would be advantageous, but training can be provided for the right person.

Our teams work in environments where following the correct procedures matters.
You'll be expected to:
- Follow Berry & Escott and customer Health & Safety procedures.
- Read, understand and follow RAMS and site instructions.
- Attend site inductions and toolbox talks.
- Use the correct PPE and safety equipment.
- Respect permit-to-work and site access procedures.
- Report hazards, near misses and unsafe conditions.
- Stop and ask if something doesn't look right or cannot be completed safely.
We're looking for someone who understands that doing the job safely and properly comes before simply getting it done quickly.
Reliability & Punctuality
This is particularly important to us. The working day starts at 7:00 am and you need to be ready to work at the agreed start time.
Site work relies on teams arriving together, permits being available, customer access, deliveries and sometimes lifting operations. One person being late can affect an entire team.
We're therefore looking for someone who is dependable, punctual and takes responsibility for getting themselves to work on time.
