At Calders & Grandidge, we're looking for a Process / Plant Operator to join our specialist timber treatment facility at our Boston site.
Part of the Rundvirke Industrier Group, Calders & Grandidge is one of the UK's leading manufacturers of creosoted timber products, supplying the rail, utilities, agricultural and infrastructure sectors for over 100 years.
This is a full-time position based at our Boston site. The role is primarily day shift; however, flexibility is essential as you will be required to support operational requirements, including covering our shift operation during periods such as holidays, absence and planned production demands. As the business evolves, the role may also transition to a permanent rotating shift pattern in the future.
The Person
We're looking for someone who enjoys working with industrial equipment and takes pride in operating safely and professionally.
You'll be comfortable following procedures, working as part of a close-knit team and taking responsibility for the safe operation of an industrial process.
You should be proactive, mechanically minded, adaptable and capable of making sensible decisions when dealing with operational issues.
Essential Experience
- Good mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to follow written procedures and safe systems of work.
- Comfortable completing operational documentation and records.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- A strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards.
- Willingness and flexibility to work a combination of day shifts and rotating shifts as required by business needs.
Desirable Experience
Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:
- Pressure systems.
- Steam systems or industrial boilers.
- Pumps, valves and hydraulic equipment.
- Hazardous materials or chemical handling.
- COMAH, ATEX or DSEAR environments.
- Process industries such as timber treatment, chemicals, food, energy, waste, utilities or manufacturing.
- Forklift licence.
The Role
As a Plant Operator, you will play a key role in ensuring our timber treatment operations run safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards. Working as part of a small operational team, you will take responsibility for the safe and effective operation of the plant while contributing to continuous improvement, reliability and production performance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Safely operating the timber treatment process in accordance with company procedures and safe systems of work.
- Operating pressure vessels, pumps, valves, hydraulic systems and associated plant equipment.
- Monitoring process parameters and responding appropriately to alarms or changing operating conditions.
- Carrying out routine plant inspections, equipment checks and first-line maintenance activities.
- Completing production records, safety documentation and operational logs accurately.
- Identifying equipment defects and reporting issues using the site's maintenance management system.
- Supporting fault finding and assisting engineering teams during planned maintenance and breakdowns.
- Ensuring treated timber meets customer quality specifications.
- Maintaining high standards of housekeeping across the plant.
- Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives to improve plant performance, reliability and safety.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues across operations, engineering and compliance teams.
- Promoting a positive safety culture by identifying hazards and reporting near misses.
Working Pattern
- Full-time position.
- Primarily day shift.
- Flexibility to cover a rotating three-shift operation during holidays, absence and operational requirements.
