Role Description
The Engraving Operative is responsible for carrying out engraving and product identification activities across iCAM Engineering to ensure that containers, components, and associated products are correctly and accurately marked in accordance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, production documentation, and company requirements.
Working within the Engraving Department, the operative plays an important role in ensuring that all required identification, serial numbers, part numbers, customer information, certification details, and other specified markings are applied accurately, clearly, and in the correct location.
Accuracy and attention to detail are critical to this role. Incorrect engraving can result in product rework or loss of traceability. The Engraving Operative must therefore carefully verify all information before engraving and ensure completed work is checked against the relevant documentation before the product progresses to the next stage of production or inspection.
The Engraving Operative will work closely with supervisors, welders and quality inspectors to maintain product traceability, resolve engraving issues, and support a consistent right-first-time approach across the business.
Key Responsibilities
· Carry out engraving activities on containers, components, plates, and associated products in accordance with engineering drawings, customer specifications, production documentation, and company requirements.
· Ensure all engraved information is accurate, legible, correctly positioned, and completed to the required standard.
· Carefully verify engraving information before starting work to prevent incorrect identification or marking of products.
· Confirm part numbers, serial numbers, drawing numbers, customer references, material information, identification numbers, and other specified details against the relevant documentation before engraving.
· Ensure the correct product or component is matched to the correct engraving information before work begins.
· Follow engineering drawings, engraving instructions, production paperwork, customer requirements, and approved examples when determining engraving content and positioning.
· Set up and operate engraving machinery and associated equipment safely and correctly.
· Select the appropriate engraving settings, tooling, fixtures and methods according to the product and specification requirements.
· Check engraving equipment and tooling before use to ensure it is suitable, correctly set, and in good working condition.
· Monitor engraving quality throughout the process and make appropriate adjustments where required.
· Inspect completed engraving to ensure information is correct, clear, legible, properly aligned, and positioned in accordance with requirements.
· Take particular care when engraving finished or polished containers to prevent scratches, dents, marking, contamination, or other unnecessary damage.
· Handle containers and components carefully before, during, and after the engraving process to protect completed surfaces.
· Ensure product identification and traceability are maintained throughout the engraving process.
· Maintain separation and identification of different jobs, products, components, and customer orders to prevent incorrect engraving or product mix-ups.
· Immediately stop work and seek clarification where engraving information is missing, unclear, conflicting, or does not match the product or documentation.
· Report incorrect documentation, missing information, damaged products, engraving errors, or other quality concerns to the Department Manager or Quality Department as appropriate.
· Accurately complete production records, engraving records, check sheets, traceability documentation, and other paperwork required by company procedures.
· Follow company procedures, standard operating procedures, work instructions, quality requirements, and customer-specific instructions relevant to engraving activities.
· Maintain engraving equipment, tooling, fixtures, and work areas in a clean and organised condition.
· Report damaged, worn, defective, or unsafe engraving equipment and tooling to the appropriate supervisor or manager.
· Maintain good housekeeping standards within the Engraving Department and surrounding work areas.
· Work closely with other departments to ensure products move efficiently through the engraving process without compromising quality or traceability.
· Prioritise work appropriately in accordance with production schedules, customer requirements, and instructions from supervisors or managers.
Person Specification
The Engraving Operative should be reliable, methodical, and highly detail-focused, with a strong understanding of the importance of accurate product identification and traceability.
The role requires someone who can carefully follow engineering drawings, production documentation, customer requirements, and written instructions. They should be confident checking numbers, codes, references, and other information and understand that engraving must be verified before work begins, as errors can result in product rework or loss of traceability.
The operative should be comfortable setting up and operating engraving machinery and associated equipment. Previous experience of engraving, CNC equipment, manufacturing, engineering, product marking, or a similar production environment would be beneficial.
