We are looking for an ambitious and detail-focused Assistant Management Accountant to join our growing finance team. This role is ideally suited to someone with a strong academic background and around two years’ experience in a purchase ledger, finance assistant or similar accounting role. The successful candidate will take ownership of the purchase ledger function while developing broader month-end, reconciliation and management accounting skills. The role will be split between end-to-end purchase ledger ownership and wider finance support, making it an excellent opportunity for a high-calibre early-career accountant who wants to progress into a more rounded management accounting role.
Purchase Ledger Ownership
- Take ownership of the end-to-end purchase ledger process.
- Process supplier invoices accurately and efficiently, including high-volume invoice processing.
- Match invoices to purchase orders and delivery notes, investigating discrepancies where required.
- Manage supplier queries professionally and follow issues through to resolution.
- Reconcile supplier statements and resolve differences in a timely manner.
- Maintain supplier master data with strong attention to detail and control.
- Prepare and process supplier payment runs in line with internal approval procedures.
- Maintain strong financial controls and support improvements to purchase ledger processes.
Month-End and Wider Finance Support
- Support purchase ledger month-end close activities.
- Assist with GRNI reviews and accruals.
- Review aged creditor balances and follow up on outstanding items.
- Support balance sheet and control account reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end journals, schedules and supporting analysis.
- Provide information and analysis to support the wider finance team.
- Support ad hoc finance tasks, reporting and process improvement projects as required.
The ideal candidate will be bright, numerate and academically strong, with approximately two years’ practical experience in finance. They will already understand the importance of accurate processing, reconciliations and controls, but will be looking for a role that gives them more exposure to month-end activity and the opportunity to build a long-term accounting career. Success in this role looks like:
- Purchase ledger processes are accurate, controlled and completed on time.
- Supplier queries and statement differences are resolved promptly.
- Month-end support is reliable, well-organised and clearly documented.
- The successful candidate demonstrates ownership, curiosity and the ability to develop into broader finance responsibilities.
Essential Experience
- Strong academic background, with good A-Level results, equivalent qualifications or a relevant degree.
- Around two years’ experience in a purchase ledger, finance assistant, assistant accountant or similar finance role.
- AAT qualified, studying towards AAT, or committed to continuing professional development in accounting and finance.
- Strong numeracy skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Confident Excel and Microsoft Office user, including Pivot Tables, lookups and basic formulae.
- Self-starter who is comfortable taking ownership of tasks and following issues through to completion.
- Confident communicator, able to work effectively with suppliers and internal departments.
- Comfortable working in a fully office-based role.
Desirable Experience
- Exposure to month-end processes, accruals, GRNI or balance sheet reconciliations.
- ERP or accounting system experience, ideally Sage.
- Experience in a manufacturing, engineering or high-volume transactional environment.
- Ambition to progress into a broader management accounting role over time.
