Job Overview
Sameday Transport Services Ltd is seeking a reliable and hardworking Yard Person to support our night-time operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a safe, organised yard environment and ensuring vehicles and equipment are operational and ready to use.
This role involves a combination of first-hand yard duties and basic administrative support to ensure accurate record-keeping and smooth night-time operations. You will play a key role in supporting the efficient running of the depot while maintaining compliance with safety and operational standards.
Working Hours & Pay
- Hours: 20:00 – 04:00hrs
- Days: 5 nights per week – (Sun – Thurs)
- Rate: £15.00 per hour
Key Responsibilities
Yard & Operational Duties
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the yard, ensuring it is safe, secure, and hazard-free.
- Assist with moving, parking, and positioning of vehicles (tractor units & trailers; vehicles from 7.5T upwards).
- Safely couple and uncouple tractor units and trailers.
- Carry out basic vehicle checks (fuel levels, tyres, cleanliness, and damage reporting).
- Refuel vehicles and trailers with diesel and top up AdBlue as required.
- Check that all ADR bags are complete, compliant, and fit for purpose.
- Support loading and unloading operations when necessary.
- Ensure all equipment is stored correctly and ready for use.
- Monitor and control yard access where required.
- Assist drivers and fleet team with general duties.
- Report defects, damages, or safety issues promptly to the Night Operations Coordinator.
- Conduct regular yard inspections to identify risks and maintain compliance with health & safety standards.
- Ensure trailers are positioned in line with operational planning and dispatch schedules.
Office / Administrative Duties
- Complete and maintain accurate records of vehicle checks, fuel usage, defect reports, and yard movements.
- Update internal systems with vehicle, trailer, and compliance information as required.
- Assist with data entry and filing of transport documents (e.g. delivery notes, defect sheets, inspection logs).
- Support the Night Operations Coordinator with administrative tasks and reporting.
- Prepare and organise paperwork for drivers, including vehicle packs and compliance documentation.
- Monitor and respond to basic communications (emails or internal systems) during shift where required.
- Ensure all records are accurate, up to date, and compliant with company and legal requirements.
- Liaise with drivers and office staff to ensure accurate information flow between yard and office operations.
Skills & Requirements
- Good understanding of health and safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Basic vehicle and trailer knowledge (desirable).
- Experience coupling/uncoupling trailers (preferred).
- Awareness of ADR equipment requirements (desirable).
- Physically fit and capable of manual handling tasks.
- Flexible and initiative-taking approach to work.
- Full UK driving licence (preferred; HGV licence desirable).
Administrative & Additional Skills
- Basic computer literacy (e.g. email, Excel, transport systems).
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong attention to detail when completing paperwork and digital records.
- Organised approach to record-keeping and documentation.
- Ability to manage time effectively between yard and administrative duties.
- Reliable with strong timekeeping.
- Problem-solving mindset and ability to remain calm under pressure.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor role in all weather conditions.
- Physically demanding with manual handling involved.
- Night shift work.
- Provide holiday cover where required.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience in a transport or logistics yard.
- Forklift licence (desirable).
- Understanding of fleet or yard operations.
- Familiarity with ADR compliance.
Health, Safety & Compliance
The Yard Person is expected to:
- Comply with all company health & safety policies and legal regulations.
- Always use personal protective equipment (PPE) where required.
- Report all accidents, incidents, and near misses in line with company procedures.
- Work in accordance with DVSA and transport compliance guidelines where applicable.
Performance Expectations
- Maintain a clean, safe, and fully operational yard always.
- Ensure vehicles and trailers are ready for dispatch without delay.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Demonstrate reliability, efficiency, and a strong work ethic in all duties.
