We are looking to recruit a gardener to support the existing team at a private estate in Shropshire. This exciting opportunity will ideally suit someone with previous experience or someone who is looking to diversify their role in horticulture.
The ideal candidate will be keen to demonstrate their creative flair and will enjoy the challenge of maintaining the productive garden and the developing walled garden to the highest of standards.
The productive arm of the estate operates from a tranquil, 1.5 acre site to provide seasonable vegetables, herbs, fruit and cut flowers for the principles. The site also holds the plant nursery which contains house plants, rare Himalayan plant collection, and young tree nursey stock
As a gardener at Mawley Hall you will be looking to build on your existing passion and skill set in a supportive environment. Experience in propagation would be beneficial, but you will be supported to learn the skills and techniques needed to excel in the role.
There will be collaboration between the wider gardens and house teams on tasks including, but not limited to, fruit pruning, foraging, management of seasonal container displays, propagation, house plant installation, and indoor floral installation.
Essential Skills and Experience
- A good knowledge and understanding of organic growing principles, operating No Dig systems.
- An interest in soil health and companion planting.
- Confident knowledge of indoor growing spaces and outdoor irrigation systems.
- Understanding of and confidence in responding to pests and diseases.
- Best practice in harvesting techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work under pressure and respond to time sensitive requests.
- Strong understanding of and respect for client confidentiality.
- Highly organised.
- Comfortable with a collaboration environment but able to work independently from a set job list and propagation schedule.
- Comfortable lone working and following the necessary health and safety policies.
- A full UK driving licence is required.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- RHS Level 2 or equivalent.
- Knowledge of seasonal orchard management, from mature to newly planted.
- Interest in floristry.
- Experience managing compost systems.
- Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
- Experience driving side-by-side vehicles.
40 hours per week 8am-4:30pm Mon-Fri. Occasional weekend watering duties may be required with time off in lieu.
