Role Purpose
To support the Physiotherapy team in delivering high-quality rehabilitation and mobilisation programmes for patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery. The Physiotherapy Assistant will assist with early mobilisation, exercise programmes, patient education, and discharge processes to promote safe recovery and independence.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Physiotherapists in delivering post-operative mobilisation and rehabilitation programmes for same-day surgery and inpatient orthopaedic patients.
- Support patients with prescribed exercises, mobility practice, and functional activities in accordance with treatment plans.
- Encourage and assist patients to achieve rehabilitation goals and maximise independence.
- Reinforce patient education regarding exercises, mobility aids, joint protection, and recovery pathways.
- Assist with the preparation and fitting of mobility aids, ensuring patients use equipment safely and correctly.
- Work closely with Physiotherapists, nursing teams, ward staff, and other multidisciplinary team members to support coordinated patient care.
- Support enhanced recovery and discharge pathways through timely mobilisation and rehabilitation interventions.
- Maintain accurate patient records and documentation in line with organisational policies.
- Prepare clinical areas and equipment, ensuring a safe and effective treatment environment.
- Participate in virtual or telephone follow-up services to support patient recovery where appropriate.
Qualifications & ExperienceEssential
- Previous experience working as a Physiotherapy Assistant, Therapy Assistant, Rehabilitation Assistant, Healthcare Assistant, or similar role within a healthcare setting.
- Experience supporting patients with mobility, rehabilitation, or exercise programmes.
- Understanding of patient handling techniques and mobility support.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable
- Experience within orthopaedics, musculoskeletal services, or post-operative rehabilitation.
- Experience supporting elective surgery pathways.
- Knowledge of Enhanced Recovery Programmes (ERP).
- Experience using electronic patient record systems.
- Experience supporting patients through virtual or telephone follow-up services.
Person Specification Essential
- Motivated and compassionate approach to patient care.
- Ability to follow prescribed treatment programmes under the direction of a Physiotherapist.
- Previous NHS Experience
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills with patients, relatives, and colleagues.
- Ability to work independently within agreed competencies and recognise when to escalate concerns.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to meet service requirements.
Desirable
- Understanding of orthopaedic surgical pathways.
- Knowledge of rehabilitation principles following joint replacement surgery.
